FCPX Trackpad-BTT question 'move to playhead'

Hi,
In FCPX I can not find any command that moves a clip to the playhead. I dont think there is one

So what I have done is use command X (cut to clipboard) and then command V (to paste at playhead)

When using the keyboard, these commands work as expected.

If I use a track pad and better touch tool for these commands I get the following issue:

1. Will work fine if I move the playhead first to position, then select clip, then execute command
2. Will not work correct If I select the clip, move the playhead, then execute command.

If I move the playhead after selecting a clip, what ever was previously in the clipboard will get moved (pasted) to the playhead, not the actual selected clip. It is though moving the playhead will not allow the currently selected clip to copy to the clip board.

Any Idea what may be causing this, or maybe there is a "move to playhead" command?

thanks
Kurt

It sounds as if you're only executives not one command rather than two. There needs to be a copy/cut command after the clip is selected before there is a paste command.

Thanks, I tried
copy>cut>paste
as well, and still get the strange results.

I also tried adding in some delays between the commands as well..

I do have a copy>paste command that works fine no matter if the playhead is moved before or after selecting the clip

I was hoping there may be a straight command for this, but I cant find one.

I'm not clear what your exact procedure. Could you detail it step-by-step exactly what you're doing?

I'm trying this and it works fine.
1- Select a clip
2- Cmd+X to cut the clip
3- Move playhead to desired new location
4- Cmd-V to paste

This does an insert paste and works quite well, no issues here. Doesn't matter where the playhead is when you copy or paste, only what is selected. Pasting will insert where the playhead is for sure.

Why do a copy then a cut? One or the other is all that is necessary.

OK, the problem is that the mouse pointer (or trackpad pointer) needs to be over the clip that you want to move before it will work right. (Command X then Command V on the trackpad only)
The playhead CAN be moved before or after the clip is selected (unlike what I just reported).. it is the pointer causing the issue..
A regular copy paste, will not have this problem.

So what I am trying to do is be able to move a clip on the timeline via the track pad (other than dragging).

Personally I think the snapping is way too 'magnetic', so I have made many commands on the trackpad so that I can keep the snapping off. (extend clip, trim in, trim out, nudge, frame ahead.. etc..) Everything works fine but this "moving" of a clip to the playhead (Via command X and command V, .. on the trackpad)

So what I need to figure out is how to be able to move a clip on the timeline using the track pad. Obviously dragging works, and I use that as well, but with snapping off you can not be frame accurate with a drag. So parking the playhead to the areas you want the clip to be moved to, seems like the next best option

thanks
kurt

This works fine with the keyboard.
Use a track pad to do it, but move the pointer off the selected clip before executing the trackpads command.

Well, I'm still not sure what the exact operation you're trying to perform is. Dragging with the Position tool works pretty well. Snapping helps if you place your playhead to a position, exact frame, and drag. Not sure there's a command to program with BTT to do that.

You do understand that the paste function goes to the skimmer?

In BTT create a single tap command macro (I am using top center) To move clip to playhead.

1st command is command X
2nd command is command V

This command will not work if the pointer is anywhere within the timeline other than over the selected clip.

Create another single tap command macro for a simple copy paste.

1st command is command C
2nd command is command V

This command will work if the pointer is anywhere.

Yes, this is not the issue.

When the command does not work (if the pointer is not over the clip or anywhere else hovering in the timeline area), what will happen is a previously copied clip will paste into the playhead position, and nothing will be cut.

If the pointer is hovering over the selected clip or is hovering outside the timeline window (where clips rest), Everything will work correct. The clip will cut, and then be pasted at the playhead.
