Photoshop files don't update....again. was created by Jonathan Levin
OK. Like deja vu again.
I am working with a simple three layer file in PS that I have imported into X and added to a project. I made some changes to the file, saved, went back to X and the changes were reflected in viewer. Beautiful.
I did this a few more times for more changes, worked fine. A couple of more tweeks and suddenly my changes n the PS file no longer changed within X!!!!!!
I know I am not that nuts, but X just stopped following the changes that were done in Photoshop. I quit PS, FCP X, restarted...nothing. I even had a friend who knows FCP X and he was baffled and was there when it worked and suddenly didn't
And here is where it gets interesting: I decided to save the PS file as a tiff file and the import that into X and now that file works just fine when I make changes to it.
So why would something that worked just stop working?

OK. A few more clues.
I tried to start fresh this AM. I'm using PS CS 6.
I trashed the PS files from the project and browser. Before I did that, I noticed that I had an exclamation point in a yellow triangle on my Projects event. When I deleted the offending graphic from the project, that went away.
So re-imported PS file into event. Added file to project. No ! on Project event. As soon as I make a change on the PS file, save, then go back to FCP X, not only does the change not carry over but I then get the ! in yellow triangle in the Event that has my Projects.
Really Weird.
When I import the very same file, but converted to TIFF, everything works fine.
So my conclusion is that FCP will work with PS files, you just can't make changes to PS file in the PS app and expect the changes to carry over to FCP even after a save. I don't know if anyone would care to test this on their system or not.
BTW- if this thread sounds familiar, I had the same issue some time ago and started a conversation in another thread, but can't locate that.

I don't think FCP X really likes layered Photoshop files. I have seen color shifting and transparency issues with a PSD that go away when that same file is saved as a PNG or TIFF and imported into FCP X. I have also found that almost every update has some negative impact on previously created layered PSD files. I have just stopped using them. It seems I always end up breaking them apart in FCP X anyway.

Well the happiness was short lived.
Now tiff files update once, and after that they don't. Trashed prefs, the whole shebang.
Is anyone else having issues with this?
May be time for a call to apple.

I've had the same problems with PS CS4, where I am able to work with the PS layer for a while and then, it seems like after I render, the layer is locked and I am not able to work on it. You can Open in Timeline to edit it, but that is not the same functionality as double clicking and editing the layers. I just purchased Pixelmator to see if I can use layered file from it, but I haven't had a chance to really test it yet. This was and issue before the 10.2 upgrade and continues.

So this is clearly a bug. I just reinstalled FCP X, I permanently removed and uninstalled my Matrox MXO mini software (good riddance) thinking and hoping that was the problem, but it still persists.
I am wondering just how widespread this problem is?
And like Mikch says, you can work with the layers within FCP by opening in timeline and then using transform, but this sure is a pain.
Next to get in touch with Apple.

Not sure if it applies in this case ... but are you saving your .psd files in Ps with "Maximize file compatibility" option turned on?
There are any flavors of .psd files over the years ... different layer styles and effects behave differently in third party apps. Which is why I avoid strokes, drop shadows and glows in Ps and do what I can with those items in FCP X or Motion.
With so much variation of .psd over the years, it has been quite a moving target for other developers (including Apple) to deal with. The Maximize file compatibility seem to help somewhat for most major problems.
Just a thought.

Thanks ButchM.
I did check all of ps cs 6's preferences and that particular one was selected. I even un checked windows compatibilty to see if that did anything but no luck.
I filed two feedback reports with Apple.
Need more testers.
Thanks Jonathan
