I have budgeted $1300 for Network NAS 5 bay diskstation solution for use with several macs with FCPX. Looking to purchase the Synology Ds1515+ or Ds1515, adding 5 4tb drives too.

Any thoughts?

Thank you in advance.

Hey Bill,

What will be the use of your NAS ?
I've got a bunch of synology and they work amazingly well for archiving FCPX projects, events etc.
They simply are the best NAS theses days, and a little more expensive than others as well. I can recommend their DSM, ie interface, it's powerful and at the same time quiet easy to use and understand.

But I wont consider it as a DAS, it wont hold sufficient transfer rates to work with FCPX.

Yes, I was considering using it like a external HDD. Archiving too.

But my primary thought process was to use it for projects/libraries.

I don't want to make a mistake purchasing it if it's not going to perform as needed.

The drives are WD red 4tb @7200rpm.

Do you recommend another with sufficient transfer rates? What would be sufficient?

Thanks

Well, I wont recommend a NAS for Projects/libraries storage.
I tried some time ago with my Syno DS 215 and the transfer rates were on the 40-50 MB/sec. I was using RAID 1 though, which is the slowest RAID. But there was some slugginess anyway.
You can use it for FCPX Backups and archiving.

You should aim for a Thunderbolt or at least a USB RAID Disk Attached Storage.
Im using 2 different LACIE for this purpose.

You will find threads on this forum about different options.

Im also using an external USB3 SSD when Im on my laptop, and it works great.
