Why am I having a hard time burning my short-film on DVD? What is the process?

Unclear how you're trying to create this DVD. Directly from Final Cut? Or are you using a DVD authoring program?
How long is the movie?
What version of FCP X?

Straight from Final Cut Pro(10.1.3). It's a short-film 9min, 33sec long.

If you don't need to author it, share from FCPX selecting DVD. Select the few options you want and that's it. If you first share to a master file ( video and audio using prores 422 is ok) then you can open that file in Compressor and use the Create Disc preset which gives you a bit more control over setting bitrate and some other parameters. Assuming you're making standard def DVD.
