Is there a way to do this now? I tried one before with 10.1 and the sony plugin. But since then sony now has Catalyst browse and FCPX 10.2 is out. I'll be working with a USB XDCAM optical drive.
Can anyone advise how to do it? I don't expect it to be as simple as exporting an MXF file and dragging that to the XDCAM drive with finder?

Yes, it is as simple as dragging the Exported MXF file into the CLIPS folder on the optical drive.
With the latest Pro Apps update from Apple, you can export a simple Stereo MXF Export out of FCPX directly.
If you need multi-channel audio (eg. Dialogue, M&E etc.) then you can do so via Compressor.
Earlier Thread on MXF Export
It's never been easier to export OP1a compliant MXF content.
Other than Apple mucking up my MXF presets with the latest update...but fixed now.
