Randy Ubillos announced his retirement today. For those who don't know, he's the engineer who created (or led the team for) FCPX, and before that FCP classic and Adobe Premiere.

Any thoughts on what this means for the future of FCPX?

Nothing, he didn't design/develop all by himself, but with a team. He came up with great ideas to start great apps, but their development was a team effort. I'm sad to see him go, and wish I had his retirement package, but I doubt it will negatively impact FCPX development at all.

Ubillos did more than that. He was the initial designer, architect, and lead developer of the first three versions of Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, iMovie and FCP X. He created Premiere for Adobe, then went to Macromedia and created a new editor which was purchased by Apple and became Final Cut, which he managed through FCP 7, then he created iMovie, then he created FCP X. He also created and managed the Aperture photo management app for Apple.

Supposedly it was his own difficulty in organizing video from a scuba diving vacation which led to FCP X's focus on metadata and media organization.

When a leader after 20y left the team, for sure it has a lot of impact! … on the team.

We don't know, HOW he lead his crew, … pure dictatorship, primus inter pares, Head-of-Senior-Chief-Architect-Master-whatever .... ;)

But the products of the last 20y show lots of Think Different. Risky, different, surprising. Last point is the importend one: esp. in a sector meant for pros, any 'change' is evil. :) You need a lot of self-esteem to proclaim "Nobody wants [strike]a stylus[/strike] tracks!", "Wheels are for cars, not colors!", "Tags, not bins!" etc etc ....

Hopefully he left 'cause he's 'exhausted', not due to 'friction' with the other leaders at Apple.

... and I assume, someone with his expertise, has left some tons of surprises... concepts, which his team have to work on the next years....

Anyhow, Thanks for iMovie, FCPX and Motion, best of luck!

20 years is a long time to be at one place, no matter how exciting and well paid that place is.
And for a creative person, some personal freedom is probably worth more than more money in the bank.
Maybe he just felt he'd done all he wanted and now want to spend more time on personal projects and family.
Apple is probably a very demanding place to work.

At least one hopes that are the reasons for his leaving and not because Apple don't prioritise FCPX anymore.

He's been traveling very extensively with his wife and family the past couple of years. i would guess he likes vacations more than going to an office, and has the money to do it.

I have it on reliable sources he was not a dictator, and that team meetings for design ideas and implementations are long, a true team effort, and exhausting. So I'm very comfortable believing that FCPX will continue to develop just fine. Apple didn't die when Jobs died, FCPX won't die because Randy is retiring. Remember, he is retiring, not switching to a different company.

Not that it matters but Randy and his husband have been married for many years. Gay and proud.

I stand corrected. But his Facebook page is filled with tons of vacation photos taken almost monthly.
