Audio levels for Broadcast inside FCPX

Hello all,

I came across a doubt that I don't find a solution. I'm just levelling the audio of my indie full feature documentary, will probably go to compressor, voice enhancement, etc, etc.
But which level should I go? Dialogues, music and FXs?
I've read that I can't go up -6db, but what about when you have dialogues and music playing together? Is the headphone trustful?

Thank you!

make sure your audio peaks at -10db using the metering in fCPX. I usually limit at -12 with a lot of compression when mixing for broadcast.

It's not that simple anymore, at least in most countries. There are new loudness standards (ITU BS.1770, ATSC A/85, EBU R128) that measure audio in LU instead of dB. In my country all broadcasters require the audiomix to be normalised to -23 LUFS. Unfortunately this type of metering isn't available in FCPX yet and since it doesn't have a master fader, you can't use a third party plugin on your mix either. That's why I always mix my FCPX projects in Logic, where I can do just that.

In Australia - we tend to have to adhere to standards based around ITU BS.1770 as well, audio mix to -24 LKFS.

Some of my colleagues use various tools like Logic, Adobe Audition or Pro Tools.

What I do is mix to a set standard of around -12db...be disciplined in that mix and then use Nugen Audio's LM Correct 2 Loudness tool. It does a nice job and we pass QC no problem, typically.
