It dont look possible, but I figured I'd double check..

Is there a way to make shapes 3D in motion and utilize the same characteristics as the 3D text?

thanks

In one of Mark Spencer's Video's he mentions that shapes that are built into fonts will work. I don't remember which video it was in, but it was one of them posted on this site.

If you have any wingding fonts they should work. They are shapes that are fonts.

I just tried it with the font "bodoni Ornamental" and It worked

I will say YMMV depending on the quality of the font.

Only fonts can be 3d, theses are gliphs. You still need mObject for actual 3D model files.

You can use any vector artwork created in Illustrator or the likes and saved as SVG. Then you convert the SVG to a font in an app like IcoMoon. When you install the font you can manipulate the artwork in the 3D Title feature.

Thanks Ronny,
ill have to check out IcoMoon.
I tried using some wingdings for shapes, but resizing caused distortions (trying to make a hollow square into a rectangle for example, Y gets skinny while X axis dont change dimensions)

I have a lot of titles created in motion that have boxes and various shapes as back drops to any fonts, but when just the font goes 3D, it dont look right... need to get all the shapes to look the same.

Yep, that goes beyond the scope of the 3D Text engine. You'll need to either apply shapes with the Extrude filter, or get mObject to do it properly. Yes, mObject goes well beyond what the FCPX built-in 3D text engine does. Both should live side by side on one's system very comfortably.

Here's a video explaining the procedure with Glyphter: vimeo.com/125453945

The video uses Motion but I have tried it and it works exactly the same way in FCP X.

Thanks Ronny,
That one looks easy to do..

Speaking of fonts, Motion separates your fonts into what font book has (fun fonts and other custom directories). I have way too many fonts on the system and if I scroll to change a font in FCP, soon I get a blank screen where the fonts will not show.

Do you know if there is a way in FCP to be able to search the font book directories rather than have it scroll through all the fonts on the system like motion can do?

thanks
Kurt
