Audio WaveForm

Look at the screen grab. Can someone tell me why the wave form is 'greyed' out.
I was using a new external mic and knucklehead did not have it set up right. Pulling in the clip I saw the main audio was gone but why is FCPX displaying a 'greyed out' waveform behind it.
Can it be recovered somehow?
I also see this on my other clips with usable audio. Second Screen grab.
THANKS!

What I ment to say is that I've seen these ghost waveforms on my clips for years and have wondered why they are there.
Thanks again!

They are reference waveforms. You can switch them off in prefs. They display an enhanced waveform if any detected audio even if it's below a useable recording level. I have an SD that seems silent, but multicam can sync it using the reference waveform.

Wondered about that today, as I had some problematic audio that was missing sections, though I could 'see' the waveforms. I thought I had made some error in FCPX and spent ages trying to find out how to recover the ghost waveforms.
Turned out the the audio in FCPX exactly matched the original recordings and there had simply been some error made by the sound guy on location...
