Yesterday Frame.IO announced a "seamless" FCP X companion App for Collaboration, coming out in May. It could be a good article here if you can get more info from them. Collaborative editing is a big deal to a lot of people. The review tools in Frame.io are impressive.

Here's the story: Frame.IO and FCP X

Can't sign into frame.io. It's tied to google and never works for me. Try wipster.io.

I signed in this afternoon and am testing. Promising application. Looking forward to seeing full integration with FCP X in May, then we will decide.

Ronny, have you found any more info on the companion app? How it all works?

Tried it again. Go to create a login and I get bumped to Google account sign in, which does nothing. Not sure why tying their operation to Goggle seems like a good idea, other than some perceived sense of security, which is crap, as Googs is like one of the world's three biggest hack targets. Not encouraging when you can't get into the site and have zero access support.

Well thats' weird. I immediately got to the sign up page and only had to enter my e-mail address, name and password. I saw no Google signup.

This is the link: frame.io

And this is the welcome page:

What browser Tom? I've never had issues with Google sign in systems. I'm assuming you have a google account?

Safari. What seems to happen is that if I enter an email address that's associated with Google, either a gmail account, or a company account that uses Google works, before you get to enter your name and password, you're immediately taken to the Google login page. I'll try some other email account.

Our team uses Frame.io and we love it.

High quality, fast encodes- proving to be a great collaboration tool that has professional options, but is still easy enough to explore for less technically inclined clients. Frame accurate comments with auto-pause options, in project uploaded clip folder-ing system, versioning, custom notifications, separates teams from invited collaborators (important for privacy and targeted sharing for clients) and they are very receptive to user feedback as the interface evolves. There are other fun features too, like various guide overlays and video (by frame) overlay drawing tools to help illustrate comments.

Only hiccup on signing in from our POV is that the user needs to use the email that was designated (basically, the address you received it to) to sign in, not another Google Account, or it won't work- again, that is for invites. I had no trouble signing in to start our team, however.

I have suggested an All Comments option to be added under the Comments sorting tab, so we can see comments from all versions of a video, at once. Also, a clip(s) "downloaded" notification option. :)

Anyone try wipster. I really like their pointer that can attach to something in the frame.

Hi Tom,

Frame.io detects whether your mail is a Google account or not and simplifies the registration since you don't have to remember another password. It's similar to using Google Mail and later YouTube - you don't have to login twice and have different passwords.

Yes I tried Wipster. They have a good product too. Personally I like the drawing features in frame.io more and the fcpx integration rocks. But I'm biased :)

@all: feel free to ask any questions regarding the fcpx integration, I'm here and try to answer as much as i can.

What I forgot to mention:

One of the big differences to other collaboration tools is that you can upload and share source files. You don't have to transcode to h264 before upload. You upload anything you want, video, audio, images, PDFs. Frame.io creates a proxy video for the purpose of online reviewing the media. But if you want to go further and send your source media to vfx or color grading guys, you don't have to use Dropbox. It's all in one box: media sharing and reviewing.

The problem for me with Google is I need to use a company email that's tied to Google, but dummy Google wants to always load my gmail account, because well it's gmail. I'll work around it. Looking forward to trying it out and sharing it with others.

Hey Dustin,

Are you working with the "Pro" Plan, or the "Team" Plan?
I'm wondering what the difference is between collaborators and team members, if we all work in the same "Project".
Seems to me everyone can just be added to the project as Collaborators.

Looking forward to hear how you are using frame.io with your colleagues.

I started with Pro and moved to Team- mostly because I have 5 production team members (including me) who needed the ability to create their own projects and have admin rights (new projects, toggle notifs, uploads, etc.) above the collaborators who are in flux... (producers, clients) but it crossed my mind for sure (esp that's what we started with) to just go with the Pro plan and run a single admin login while inviting 'team members' as collaborators- an option that might be worth exploring and might still work for others...

It would definitely save money that way, if you can swing it.

I kinda wish they would do at least 3 Team members at the Pro level.. seems more fair. (Poor animators! 2 of 5) ;)

Also, the 100GB bump was nice since we have a lot of episodic television based and commerical campaign versioned projects running at once, during quarter 1/2 network broadcast season, particularly, that easily privatized, high quality downloads are needed for, in lue of Vimeo or FTP. Honestly, given the collaborative features, more naturalized organization and growing FCPX integration, I see us transitioning away from Vimeo except for uses in VOD, with this new setup.

Hope this helps!
Dusty

Edited:

Sorry was writing in a hurry- to be more clear:

Team Members can see all current projects and interact/create them. No additional inclusion is needed. (Multiple Admins)

Collabs are more like clients or possibly other project members who can only comment/interact with projects that they are invited to. They cannot create projects or access other admin options. But you could invite them to all of your projects if this fits your workflow. :)

Hey Dusty,

Thanks for the clear explanation. I agree 2/3 team members would be fair for the Pro plan, especially because during the trial it doesn't give you a warning when adding team members (it does when you create more projects) so I assumed I could add a few.

I'm running 2 TV shows and a few corporate video's and I just created separate projects for each of them.
Just like you suggested I added everyone as a collaborator and so far so good.

I asked on twitter if they will add the option to share a video link without the "Download" option.
They replied they will include this in the future and I can definitely see us moving away from Vimeo when this is happening!
