the best way to upgrade FCPX

In the past when I upgrade FCP and Compressor I have been doing it by saving whatever prefs I need, deinstalling the software and relevant files, and then installing the new version. Then I add back in my prefs from the older version. But is this longer way of doing it really necessary? Should I just install the new version of FCPX over the old? Or is the way I've been doing it in the past the cleaner, safer way...even though takes a bit more work and steps?

I ask this just as I am about to upgrade from FCPX 10.1.4 to 10.2.
