new project was created by robertellx
Each time I create a new project what I get is the last project I worked on. I have tried deleting all the events and starting with a clean slate but it has proved difficult and annoying to do so.
Please aid me,

Robert

Are you using Cmd-N to make a new project?

Sounds like you are duplicating the current project somehow. Have you tried File>New Project?

Are you double-clicking the new project? Because when you have one open in the Timeline pane, then create a new one, it doesn't automatically open in the Timeline pane, always.

Ben,

the first thing I get is the new project box where it asks me to define the event and references 2 different default events on projects I have been working on. Shouldn't a new project start from scratch with no reference to what came before?

First, what version of the software are you using?

Second, no a project is dependent on the media, which if why the project wants to know what event it's related to.

What Tom said. A Project is a timeline in which you edit media from an Event.

If you want to start a new production: crate a new Library and import media into the Event of that Library. Then create a Project to edit the media.

Tom,
well, if the media for the new project is entirely new why if I create a new project do I get a blank timeline for that project but have media from a previous project in the library?

And, why is the default event referencing an already existing event instead of first opening a new blank project with no events included and it not referencing a previous event in the dialog box instead of my being able to add new event references as I add them to the new project. This would cause the project to have both the project library without content and the media in the library as well. Now I have to delete all previous media to start fresh, first leaving the data for the previous project in the library, then adding new media and then deleting the old media.

The problem is terminology. Project means something very specific in FCP. A project is an empty timeline inside an event which is inside a library. When you make a new project you're making that thing. As Romny said if you want to start something completely new, a new job, new production, whatever, you begin by making a new library. The media for this library is separate from the media of any other library. The library comes with one empty event. Make a new project and it's an empty timeline in an empty event in an empty library.

Tom,

I am using 10.0.8.

But if the media is entirely new wouldn't it go into a new empty project event instead of having my only choose being to reference it to a previous event and having the media from the previous event still being referenced in the event library, and not showing the media as existing under a new name event. I tried creating a new project, let it choose the previous unrelated event. I got a blank project and blank timeline but there is no reference in the library to that new project events. Instead, the event library only shows the name and media from the previous project preexisting event which I presume is part of the previous project which is listed in the library.
I
'm so sorry that I can't grasp the concepts told to me here but it just isn't clear to me the answers to the questions raised. Believe me I'm trying.
MY main questions are:

1) Why, when I create a new project it is not listed in the event library as a new event under a new name?
Why is there a new blank project in the project library, but the event library is still referencing previous events.
I know that perhaps my questions are unclear but I am very confused.

Tom,

But it is not listed as a new event in the library. New blank timeline. yes. New project in the project library yes. But it doesn't reference a new empty event in the event library, only events from previous projects.

Forget much of what I wrote; you're using an obsolete version that doesn't have separate library bundles. In your version a project is one folder, an event is another folder that holds your media. When you make a new project you're making a new timeline that is tied to one event. You can draw material from any event, but every project has a default event that it's tied to. When you import media by default it goes into the default event.

If you're beginning a new production with new media, you begin with a new event, not with a new project.

Tom,

Well I'll try that and see what happens but what do I do with the old data, keep it and ignore it in the existing events folder or delete it? How do I create a new event to hold my new files?

Whether you keep your old media is up to you. Most people back up there projects and events in case they need them again.

Not sure if I remember exactly in that version but it's probably in the File menu somewhere.

You should consider upgrading the software.

Tom,

Well, I think I've worked this out. Instead of creating a new project and having media in it from other events I created a new event which shows , an empty new timeline and an empty event folder. I'll have to keep working with it to see if it actually works but I have a feeling it might.

In any case thank you for your patience and assistance in this matter.

Robert
