Edits disappear from timeline

I'm using the latest FCPX and cannot believe that the edits I make in my timeline have disappeared. Hours of work vanish. I'm told FCPX automatically saves my work and there is no manual way to "save". Much careful work has to be re-done and I'm frustrated and wondering what I can do now.

Hi Judith, welcome to the forum.
FCP X autosaves your work every 15 minutes. If you have lost some of your edits for whatever reason you can select your Library, then choose File > Open Library > From Backup. A window will pop up with a timed list of all the backups of the Project you are working on. Open one of these backups to see if this brings back the edits that have "disappeared".

And, are you sure you're opening the same Project Timeline you were working on?

sorry for sounding a bit offensive, but:
Are you sure you edited a Project?
… FCPX offers several 'timelines' or things looking like a sort of timeline ... , not all are shown on launch ...
Add a screenshot on your next post ...
How does your Eventbrowser look like? That is the natural habitat of shy Projects ...

As Karsten pointed out, and why I asked the question I did, is that everything in the Browser is a "Timeline", everything.
I often have students in my FCPX classes walk in on day 2 or 3 and have this same confusion. Not knowing a different Project or something is open, not what they were working on previously, for various reasons.

I'm pretty sure I have open only one project. I'm now duplicating it and will risk closing and opening the iMac and hope my work is saved.

There is no risk at all, your work is always saved when you close the application. And besides this, FCP X makes automated backups every 15 minutes.
But you really should post a screenshot of your timeline and your Clip Browser so we can see what is really going on.

Thank you. When I want to move several clips at once I will use this method. So will I lose my edits by using it ?
