a.k.a. making a showreel.

It's time to make a show reel. Is there a way to use media from different libraries/events without FCPX copying the media? I'm running low of hard drive space and if I remember correctly if you use media from different libraries it duplicates it?

Any other tips for something like this?

You may be able to do it with Hard Links. This was posted from Ripple Training and Sam.
- It sounds like it might work for what you are doing.

Thanks! I'll check that out when I have access to proper internet! (they have ridiculous small amounts of data with the mobile internet solutions here in Germany!)

Hey DmitriZigany,

I am not a 100% sure about this (probably someone from the forum can confirm this) but as long as all the library and media files are on the same Hard-Drive the files are not copied but instead Final Cut X will use Hard-Links, which is explained in the video from BeOriginal.

You might as well have a look at this blog post from Larry Jordan: Link
He explains how you can change your Managed Media Library files into External Media.
This way all the files will be outside the Library in a folder structure and this allows you to find the exact files you are looking for and transfer them to a new disk/project.

Hope this is helpful,

Martijn

I have a more technical explanation, from my experience (though semi-retired) as an IT engineer with UNIX systems.

Hello,
If your media are not copied inside the library, even if it's not on the same disk, FCPX doesn't copy the media.
If your media is inside the library, FCPX copy the media, even if it's on the disk…

So two solutions:
– avoid to put the media inside library
– you can make an "alias" from the media inside the library and import it in your new library.
Hope that helps,

Only for soft links, not for hard links.
