MONITOR OUT FROM FCPX ON IMAC 5k

I have read that Mac pro is able to use the HDMI out for monitoring FCPX by enabling the A/V out. I have an HDMI adapter Thunderbolt to HDMI connected to a LCD TV getting picture as a second display but trying to activate it as a monitor from inside I mac 5k does not work. I cant choose HDMI out in preferences in FCPX and therefore not turn "AV out" to active. Any suggestions ?

If I understand you correctly, you have a iMac 5K and you are using a TB>HDMI adapter. ??
AFAIK, the iMac does not have a HDMI port which is when you would use A/V out, like on the nMPs. Using TB, this is not an option.
I could be wrong as I do not have a iMac.

Hope this helps, Greg

Greg is correct, you have to use the HDMI output specifically. Via T'bolt you need a broadcast signal output device, like the BMD UltraStudio Mini Monitor.

Thanks a lot for the tips just got my Ultra Studio Mini Monitor. Working perfectly. Also gives me multichannel sound out if I need that. With my new receiver Sony STR-DH 550 I loop HDMI trough to LCD TV and get the sound monitoring as well.

Great to hear that you've got a working output now. How do you like the Ultra Studio Monitor?

I was wondering if you changed any settings to get the sound output to work. I am working with a blackmagic Decklink Sdi card and I used to have Audio and Video output trough my broadcast monitor in Final Cut Pro 7.

When I use my Decklink in Final Cut Pro X I only get a video signal, I just assumed this was not supported in X

Kind regards,
Martijn

What are your system settings for sound output?

On Final Cut 7 my setup used to be like this:

Line output --> into channel 1/2 of mixer
Blackmagic Sdi output --> Broadcast monitor --> into channel 2/4 of mixer.

Mixer is connected to 2x XLR for my 2 speakers.

On Final Cut Pro 7 I always had Blackmagic audio selected in audio output, and system settings would be the line out. This way I could mute system sound while mixing a video.

Since there is no setting in FCP X to select the audio output I figured this wasn't possible anymore, until I read this post.

BTW. On the video monitoring end, I've found that the HDMI out works much better than my Matrox MX02 as well as AJA boxes that I have used. Much less latency. Granted when I need to goto my CRT, I plugin my Matrox.

Also, Broadcast out of FCPX works on any Mac with a 1080p or 4K Display connected through HDMI.

So far the the Ultra Studio Monitor works well. The blackmagic monitor shows up automatically as a sound out possibility but only if the receiver/amplifier is turned on. (or something else is connected I presume.) In applications utilities (hope thats right all in Swedish here) you find an application sound-midi or whatever it is called in english. Here you can choose blackmagic and decide how many channels you want to send, stereo or surround. Very easy indeed. Not so used to surround mixing but played around a little with the surround panner and it actually worked.

And don't forget you can configure outputs with OS X "Audio MIDI Setup" app. Look in Applications > Utilities, and when launched be sure to go to the Window menu to Hide the MIDI Devices and Show the Audio Devices.
