Has anyone had any success using XML to move data between FCP and Filemaker Pro? I've been trying to do this on and off for several years without success. Now I archive to LTO it would be really useful to be able to manage both the archive and the edit metadata from within Filemaker. The problem appears to revolve around an appropriate schema. I would be really grateful for any pointers.

You may want to try translating the FCPXML into the more standard XML with Xto7. I doubt Filemaker reads FCPXML natively.

Thanks, my understanding is that Filemaker needs a schema to import the XML data. This existed for FXP 7 but the DTD available from Apple for X does not work in that form. I cannot find a tool to perform the translation either. I tried speaking to the people at Filemaker - who considered it an Apple issue.

Xto7 translates FCPXML to FCP 7 XML, that would solve it for you, as I stated.

Thanks again Ben, but the FCP 7 XML does not carry all the X metadata I need, roles and so forth. Filemaker Pro will import and export any XML so long as it validates against an appropriate schema - it needs this for 7 too. I have the DTD from Apple but cannot translate that to a working schema.

Since Filemaker pro can easily import Excel formatted files
« Producer’s best friend » is the most likely immediate solution to your desire it does translate fcpxml to Excel format. It is on the « App store » itunes.apple.com/us/app/producers-best-f...688519794?ls=1&mt=12

This software has very detailed reporting and now generates thumbnails more info here:

Thanks Francois, I have this software and a quick check tells me I can get much, if not all, of what I want into Filemaker. Getting it out again is still an issue - but this certainly is interesting for the archive. A good workaround, thanks again.

The way back could be using « Shot Notes X » it can take a simple metadata CSV and output an appropriate fcpxml file

1 - Import back your unarchived shots in a Library > Event, export an fcpxml for initiating the ShotNotesX workflow

2 - Export a corresponding « Shot Notes X » compatible CSV from « Filemaker pro »

3 - Let « Shot Notes X » do its stuff … you’ve got some metadata back with your media
