Nope, just an average Panasonic HD video camera. Nothing out of the ordinary as per my described work flow a few posts ago.
I'll just have to try again from scratch (but with the proxy files) and just chalk it up to a gremlin in the system

Hi Doug,
Optimized Media and Proxies are not the same. Optimized Media will transcode all clips that are not "edit friendly", like MP4 or H264 with interframe compression (compression between multiple frames) to ProRes 422.
I'll try to give a simple explanation.
ProRes has an intraframe compression, which means that all compression is done in the individual frames.
Intraframe compression is much better suited for editing because every individual frame remains an individual frame, so you can easily cut between them.
Interframe on the other hand, needs a complete series of compressed frames, called a "Group Of Pictures", in order to rebuild them to the original sequence of individual frames. Whenever you make an edit on a frame that is somewhere in the middle of a Group Of Pictures, this Group Of Pictures has to be rebuilt which is hard on processing power.
When you transcode to Proxies, FCPX will make half resolution files in the ProRes Proxy codec, which is the most compressed flavor of ProRes. This results in a very small file size, very CPU and GPU friendly.
With just a mouse click you can switch between Proxy and Optimized/Original.

****UPDATE****
Hi folks,
I've taken everyone's advice wrt to the problem of retiming the clip, and I've come to a conclusion : It can't be done, or at least not on my computer for some reason.
I have no idea what is wrong, but I've imported the clips and made proxy files, I've lowered the quality of the video for editing purposes, only used a single clip for retiming (as opposed to trying to retime a multicam clip), etc (i.e. pretty much have done what everyone has suggested), closed libraries, deleted files, yet the clip still won't play (unless I want to try to select it and wait for 5 mins EVERY time I move my mouse while the computer thinks about what it wants to do).
Thanks heaps for your suggestions nonetheless. I have no idea why when I play a single clip and try to retime it, it simply won't do it. I've done the same thing with other clips a number of times, but I just don't think that FCPX likes this single file.
