Quit FCP X, then launch it again while holding the ALT+CMD keys pressed down. A window will pop up asking you if you want to delete your preferences. Confirm and FCP X will start with an empty Library. See if this solves your problem. If this does not help, post back.

If not, try the above steps with a native title..
editing a title sometimes causes the UI titles in the inspector to react to the changes in the title.. I seen this happen several times on custom titles I have made.''

If I remember right, it was primarily line space or tracking that causes this.
If you have made no custom motion titles, try with a regular installed title.
But I noticed it first appear after I opened a title in motion (from FCPX) and changed the default line spacing of the title
Add the title to the timeline and type in 2 lines of text
Select all the text and change the line spacing (less or wider)
Now try the pulldown again and see if the fonts are still jumbled up.
keep playing with this if it doesn't resolve the issue right away, I am sure it will fix it.

Do you have motion, and did you make a custom title?
If so, use that title to change the line spacing.
Try again on a new library/event/project
If I remember right, I didnt need to do this but it may be what is needed for you.

And it's been an on and off thing since before Yosemite. It disappeared in some version (can't remember which one, maybe 10.1.2) but now have it again since at least 10.1.3. Can't remember when it happened first time. I think it was before 10.1...

Dkag7 I didn't make any custom titles. The only thing I can think is that is must be a fontbook or fontexplorer X problem because I use those apps to manage my fonts, but can't see how they still work, even if their names don't display properly.

There's no tried and true way to fix it besides full OS reinstall so far.

It could of course be caused by bad fonts. But haven't had the energy to go through the process of deleting fonts etc,.

I have 2565 fonts listed under all fonts in font book.
About a year ago when I seen this, I remember setting the line spacing in FCPX on a title on the timeline, then going to change the font, and noticed in the dropdown they were all jumbled up. The closer i made the spacing, the worse the dropdown got. I went back into the title on fcpx timeline and reset (or changed) the line spacing then looked again at the pull down and they were all OK. I did this a couple times to verify and each time I changed the spacing in the timeline title, the dropdown fonts would jumble up.
I found it odd that changing a font on the timeline would mess up the UI's font area.. thats how I remembered this bug.
One possibility is maybe that particular title needs to be changed.. It would be impossible to find what title it is in many projects thats for sure..
So Maybe try this..
Create a new default library then close all other libraries in FCP
Close FCPX
Delete the new library you just created
Open FCPX, and this should force it to create a new default library.
Now check the font dropdown id its still messed up try again by creating a new title and mess around with the line spacing again.. maybe use 3 or 4 lines to do this in the title.

Does it always happen when changing line spacing?

Other times I can change spacing fine.

Have already gotten a few crashes though when changing fonts etc. Did a bit of clean up of installed fonts so I have to see if things improve. But my experience is that FCPX is rather unstable when working with fonts/titles.

Also, FWIW, nearly 3000 fonts on a system, particularly an older system can be taxing and I would recommend if one needs that many to make collections and activate groups of them as needed. This can be done inside Font Book.
Seems all to be related to the OS and not FCPX, at least in my case.
Creating history....one edit at a time !

I also haven't had ANY issues with fonts in any other app except for FCPX which frequently crashes when changing font.
Let's see how 10.2 treats me. At least I don't have the jumbled lst anymore

Too many fonts also slows down FCPX loading time (loading motion content' is what gets listed in the background render task window)
So I just reset font book back to its original settings and FCP is working better.
The 'deleted' fonts are still in the removed folder, so I can add them back in as needed.. as needed meaning 1 by 1 when the needs arise.
I do for-see me adding 'shape' fonts in the future for some 3D stuff, so its probably a good idea to get font book back to its original fonts first, before adding in more of these 'shape fonts''
