for BenB snapshot workflow..

for BenB snapshot workflow.. was created by dkag7
Here is the work flow..
I have many projects to do that are very similar.
Each timeline has 'segments'.
I identify these segments with titles (set V to hide the title) over the needed areas in the timeline. So in the invisible title, I will right notes as to what the clip flow is in that titles segment etc..). You can read the notes within the disabled title on the timeline).
Once the timeline is done, I duplicate that project as a snapshot.
(the project is all multicam, various titles, filters etc..)
Now I rename that snapshot to the new projects name.
Open that new project in the timeline (timeline wise it is still identical to the old project).
Now begin changing clips as needed, I will shift f from the timeline to find the area of the clip, then find the new area I need within that clip for the new project, drop to the timeline.. repeat... moving to the next segment.. etc..till done.
This is my way of making a 'timeline template' to speed up repetitive projects like 'how to' videos where I have multiple TB of raw footage to use. This in combination with the initial logging of footage (keywords etc..).
Sorry I have to dis agree about the button bar.. I loveded it. Pressing a button was much faster than remembering all the keyboard shortcuts.. for me anyway.
I have a track pad and a shuttle pro2 that I assign frequent commands to. Other than that I would love more buttons in the UI, customizable.. or even a 3rd party app that can hover over FCPX and have customizable buttons for commands..
thanks
Kurt

I wonder if you're really saving time making snapshots and changing angle content, rather than dropping the master Multiclip into a new Project and editing it from scratch. Changing that much content in a timeline, I've never seen anyone do that exactly. My studio hasn't done that, so that's new. Would be interesting to get Ronny's take on this.
The many years I taught and consulted for legacy FCP I rarely found anyone who actually used the button bar. Most folks found learning keyboard shortcuts (the way I taught them, at least) much faster and easier. But if buttons worked for you, fill out the feedback form, let the dev team know you want them. I'm sure there are other users asking for more buttons, too. The more folks who ask, the closer it gets to being done.

it took about a day to make the master timeline, after that the template projects take about an hour or so to do each. It saves me tons of time.
There are many multicam clips per project, not just one.
The notes in the titles help because they are connected to elements in the timeline that do not get deleted, so viewing the notes within the title on the timeline, help when choosing the angle/ trans/ look etc.. that the customer wants for those particular clips.
Also before I start on the new timeline, I expand the audio on the existing clips so I can differentiate when a new clip is added.
I add the new clip right before the old one, do its edits per the title notes and looking at the older clips, then once done delete the older (audio expanded) clips from the timeline.
(Color coding would be better here)
I use these type templates often and make as many filters, titles, effects etc.. in motion as as i can to use as well.. anything to speed up either the editing or keeping the timeline as small (layers) as possible.

I kinda like this Snapshot approach and I think this can indeed save you time, especially since your master timeline is quite complex. Using disabled titles to set notes on timeline segments is also a clever idea. Never have done any of this myself because very little of the work we do is repetitive. But it surely is an interesting idea.
As to the button bar, I don't miss that in any way. Probably because I have never used it in any other NLE either, I'm really one of those keyboard shortcut geeks
But if course I understand that once you have gotten used to working with buttons you miss this in FCP X. As Ben said: submit a feature request, I think you will not be the only one who would like to have this back. Color coding is certainly something most us would like to have.

HI Kurt,
Just wondering about using the Timeline index for some of what you are doing.
I must admit I don't quite get the how's and why's of creating disabled titles unless it is just to provide the notes function??
Wouldn't using "notes" in the Timeline index also do this?
The index also allows instant selection of clips/location/playhead in Timeline, would this be faster? I have been incorporating using the Timeline index more and more. Faster than scrubbing in long projects.
Just curious? Different strokes for different folks
Hope this helps, Greg

i have made many attempts to try and use it.. I do on occasion.. but for the most part I like a long timeline. Using the disabled title is just so I can visually see each timeline 'segment'.. it is good for this type project anyway.. I dont use them often because I disable clips alot while working and it can get confusing as to what to re-enable when needed.. another good example where color coding would be handy.
