Bit OT, but fun. How Pro is FCPX interface? Just came into my mind.

With FCP X Apple introduced the Timeline Inspector.
Many people didn't realize that it existed and what it is good for.

I liked it from the beginning.
As some people know: I'often involved into subtitle workflows.
I currently work on a FCP X subtitle to DCP integration and checked the newest dcpPlayer app to test the subtitles from FCP X.
Was quite fun - the interface looks like FCP X's Inspector and timeline.

It has the same functions and even more than FCP X - so Apple could extend the features in FCP X :)

Full video (part 1)

FCP X is still a crappy consumer app. Why the hell a professional company like Fraunhofer takes the same approach to a timeline interface (more or less copies it) into a 5000+ USD professional package. :cheer:

"...a crappy consumer app" that a couple of feature films were edited on? Are we still having that discussion?

Germans don't have humor and nobody here knows what irony is or means.
We also don't write complete sentences. They only look like that. In reality these are keyword collections. Everybody can filter out his matching keywords to make some sense out of the written text.

And yes, I feel guilty and ashamed to have been partially involved in the production workflow of Focus.

I filtered Andreas' keyword reply and it returned: "partially in Focus".

This FCPX is light-years ahead.

FCP X is not Pro at all. It is easy to learn and fun to work with, it's powerful and versatile, it does not crash every hour, it doesn't require expensive support plans, anyone can afford it and it gets regular updates at no extra cost. So definitely not "pro" ;)

Good one Ronny.

When you boil it down, we are all amateurs:

1775-85; < French, Middle French < Latin amātor lover, equivalent to amā- (stem of amāre to love) + -tor -tor, replaced by French -teur (< Latin -tōr-, oblique stem of -tor); see -eur

Take golf as an example, you have 2 types of golfers, amateurs and professionals, both use the same clubs, play the same courses, only one makes money doing this, the other does it for the pure love of the game.

If you make money video editing then you are a professional video editor, as to what you use, that is up to you, a professional golfer could play a round of golf using nothing more than a putter and child's over-sized plastic club...You can use imovie, windows movie maker, FCP X or any of the 100+ systems available.

The point is, an amateur is someone that does it cause they like doing it, and not expecting payment or to make a living doing video editing, a professional expects payment, as such you would expect the professional to take the time and effort to build up a suite that is of a high standard, the amateur might not go as far.

FCP X is used by professionals, it can rightly be called a professional grade system, is it perfect, no, that simply will never exist, Apple are working to improve the system.

The original release aka 10.0 series was well a unmitigated failure, and I am sure it was hard for Apple to admit the 10.0 series was terrible, they took the failure well, and within months released the far superior 10.1 series FCP X...

It is not the tools that matter, but the artist using the tools that matter..

I filtered MsJustine's post using Andreas' algorithm and it returned: "FCPX 10.0 bad; 10.1, good". ;-)

Many amateur videographers only do a couple weddings a month, get paid, but are doing it for fun. So "getting paid" is not a measure of professional or not. Defining professional from amateur is a gray area today.

I have a friend who is an amateur golfer. Plays in specifically titled "amateur" events and tournaments. She also teaches. She gets money from it, but it is not her full time job, it is a hobby that happens to bring in a few bucks. She is an amateur, but scores like a pro, and does it as a hobby. Huge gray area when trying to draw hard lines between pros and hobbyists these days.

I've said it before, I'll say it again; Two terms in the video/broadcast/film industry no longer have any real meaning. "Professional" and "Industry Standards". Nothing is strictly professional, there are no industry standards any longer, not at all.

But German beer is forever, thankfully.

And FCPX is not professional, at all, never has been, never will be, never used on a "professional production" ever, no "professional" has ever used it "professionally", it sucks and should die. I know this cause I read it on the Interweb world pipe thingy, The Facebook I think it was...
