Dissolve problems with Stabilized footage

Dissolve problems with Stabilized footage was created by echomedia
I am using version X.1. When I add a dissolve to footage that has been stabilized, the image pops bigger when the dissolve completes. It's like the cropping that occurs with stabilized footage doesn't happen during the dissolve then immediately kicks in when the dissolve is over, resulting in a noticeable and annoying jumping of the image. I've tried re-rendering, re-stabilizing, re-doing, but this looks like a built-in bug. Can anyone suggest any work-arounds other than not using a dissolve on stabilized footage?

Yes have you tried to put the stabilized clip in a compound clip ? And then add the dissolve on top of it ?

Haven't tried that, but it sounds promising! Thanks!

OK- I tried it a number of ways and it works if you do this: Combine the stabilized clip with a piece of slug into a compound clip. Then the Dissolve works without the funky "popping" effect. Thanks!

the problem is probably that you have stabilized only the length of footage up to the point of the transition.
however the dissolve needs a handle on the end equal to half the length of the dissolve.
so basically, make it a compound clip, then go into the compound clip, grab the end of the original clip and drag it out, and stabilize until the end. now you have a stabilized handle.
when you now go back and apply the transition, it will be blending the stabilized extra frames with the next clip.

Jak-
Yup, I did the handle thing too.
Of course, in a perfect world it would be unnecessary to do any of this compound clip nonsense if FCPX worked like a sensible editing program.
But I appreciate the help from everyone helping me find a way to make it work right.

I'm not totally sure, but it might also work to simply lift the clip above the primary storyline temporarily, extend it and stabilize it, then shorten it again and overwrite back to the storyline. then place the transition.

I'll try that next time. I hope it works because doing the compound clip technique can get very time-consuming.

Sorry I am coming to this conversation late, but in case anyone is still monitoring the thread, I recently experienced the exact same issue — and I can confirm that manoucho's solution works like a charm. What I don't understand is WHY it works — probably because I know nothing about the science of compound clips. If any of you are still checking in, I would appreciate any insights into why creating a compound clip lets me edit stabilized video without any glitches in transitions such as dissolves and others. And either way, many thanks for this solution, manoucho.

The cross-dissolve is working on the Compound container, it's not directly affecting the clip inside of it, thus the stabilization is not misguided by the cross-dissolve, so to speak. The Compound container limits effects, alpha channels, etc, to inside the container and not affect anything outside of the container.
