Is it me / my setup or has FCP X lost the functionality to quickly navigate fonts?

I'm sure it used to go straight to the fonts beginning with the letter I pressed on the keyboard but now it just goes straight to the top of the list regardless of what key I hit.

Am I going mad?

You're not going mad. I've always had a problem with this, hit the key for the first letter of the font you want, any other software would go to the fonts starting say B, FCPX goes to the top of the list. It worked briefly at one stage then broke again.
