Does anyone know how you hook up a Panasonic AJ-D450 to a MackBook running Final Cut Pro X ? Is it through the RS-232C connector and a USB to Serial interface? Do I need to add any special software to make it work?

You're doing to need an audio/video interface to decode it and feed it to the Mac. Don't think a serial to USB converter it going to work. The USB I/O device is what needs to convert to a digital signal your Mac understands. AJA and Blackmagic both have solutions for this type of connection. And you'll want to come out of the deck via SDI output if possible, into the I/O device.
