Multicam & Replace sound

Hi,
I have been editing some multicam clips and it's almost done.
I have been using the cameras audio as guide....
I will receive the final mix today and need to replace the camera audio.
What is the easier way to do this?

Thanks
joni

Don't hurry, the Colonies still asleep. ;)

Depends on:
Is the audio uncut? Then, apply the mix to the project and let FCPX synch it. When done, mute the original.

Or ....
Is the audio edited too?
Then, open Angle editor, New Angle, drag final mix into it, synch it, memorize track number, example 5
When done, in your project, hold alt-key and drag clip below original = to double it.; double still selected, switch to the new track by hitting key with corresponding number, example 5.

Repeat last step for each clip.

Thank you Kasten.

Audio is edited too. So I would have to do your last suggestion. Can you elaborate on that? I didn't quite get it...

Here are some more details:

This is a live concert edit.
I have created a multicam clip for each part of the concert.
I have synced the cameras and started editing keeping the audio of one of the cameras as a reference.
Now I want to replace the final mix.
(I could just place an audio clip under the multicam clip and sync manually. But how can I mute all the audio in the multicam clips)

I did not understand your method...still learning FCPX and loving it.

thanks again
joni

Is there a way to replace selected clips with the audio from a specific angle?

I'm still not clear on how this is arranged, so I will offer two solutions.

If you have simply left a camera as your audio, you should not have done that. Always set a dedicated audio angle and select that angle in your project before you begin cutting. Do this even if you have to duplicate one of your cameras as a scratch audio track.

The easy workaround is to go into the angle editor and turn that camera into a compound clip, open the compound clip and manually sync your mixed audio to the camera clip. Make sure you turn off the camera audio. When you return to the project, you will now hear the mix.

If you already have a dedicated audio angle that you have selected in your projects, then the easiest thing to do is to go into the angle editor and replace that audio with the new audio. You can then set a camera as monitoring angle, select the audio clip and (from the dropdown menu for the angle) choose "Sync Selection To Monitoring Angle". This is the best way to do things.

Just to be clear, there is no way to group alter angles of multicam clips in a project.

Actually no Mac at hand, but if I remember correctly

Extract audio from clip in Project
Select audio track, in Inspector, select wanted audio

The easiest way to do it:
  1. Select the original multiclip in the Browser. Right-click and choose "Open in Timeline".
  2. In the Angle Editor, click on the triangle of the lowest angle and choose "Add Angle"
  3. Drag the sound mix to the new angle.
  4. Select the audio clip, click on the triangle of its angle and choose "Sync to monitoring angle" *Make sure the angle with the camera reference audio is chose as monitoring angle.
  5. If you go back to the project, all instances of the multi clip will now display in the Inspector (Audio panel > Channel configuration) new audio channels representing the audio clips you just added.
  6. You just need to turn those on, and turn off the rest of the channels.

Done!

I hope it was helpful. Cheers,

I didn't know that you could do that with the channels on a multicam clip. Nice one.

JPM, than you. That solved it for me.

Glad to help! Multicam in FCPX is really the best there is!

Premiere CC 2014 comes close, but guess where Adobe gets their multicam ideas from...

Avid hasn't updated its multicam for ages. You still cannot change a multi clip in Media Composer 8.3 once it's created in any way: you cannot add new angles (something that was already possible in FCP7) nor adjust sync afterwards.

FCPX allows for all that and much more, like adding video / audio effects to any angle inside the multi clip.

Many people say that FCPX lacks so many features, but no one ever mentions how many features are missing from the competition. And how much FCPX is offering already for such a small prize.

I agree Jesús. Multicam in FCPX is very well implemented...
