Help with Microphone / Recording Voiceover

Hi Guys,

Having real issues setting up and recording voiceover into Final Cut Pro X.

I'm using a Rode Video Mic Pro, a MacPro and latest Final Cut Pro X.

The Mac / Final Cut isn't recognising the Mic. So my question is, can you use the Rode VideoMic with the Mac Pro / Final Cut to record voiceover? If the answer is yes, what could I be doing wrong?

I've tried plugging it into both 3.5mm jacks... It's self powered etc... I've tried finding it in Garage band and System preferences etc..

Thanks to anyone who could help.

I've had problems when it has been switched to stereo with a mono input

A USB interface would help.
But if you plug into the external input, and set System Settings for external input, and set the mic to mono (as Peter mentioned), it should be heard. If not, you'll need a USB audio interface.

Hi CF
Couple of silly things, make sure your battery (9v) in the mic is good and the mic is powered on. Check the level/gain switch, that the 3.5mm plug is clean and all the way in, check Sound Preferences is set to "External Mic" for input (option click on sound icon in menu bar for a shortcut) and finally make sure it is working on a different device (camera, etc…)
While this mic has a stereo TRS plug, it is a mono mic that sums audio to both channels. This may explain Peter's suggestion. Also Apple uses different 3.5 input jacks for different models of computers. You might try a 3.5 stereo to mono adapter and see if this works.

Having said all this, not sure a shotgun mic is the best for VO. Maybe the best is the mic you have tho :P

Hope this helps, Greg
