Real-time green screen?

is it possible to record while manipulating chroma key? Like a weatherman for example? It would be a heck of a lot more fun to do green screen projects if my subjects could see what they're working with while recording.

Hi Ryan, welcome to the forum.
BoinxTV is indeed one of the possible solutions and it works well. If you Google "realtime chroma key mac" you will find other possible solutions as well.
You don't need expensive professional realtime keying hard- or software to do this. You just need this to give your talent some realtime feedback on what they are doing, so the key does not need to be technically perfect on-set. You connect your camera to the realtime system to preview the keyed images, while you record the un-keyed green screen footage with your camera. Then you do the real keying while you edit the green screen footage in FCP X, which has a great color keyer.

I've used VeeScope Live for years. It is great to be able to test my lighting and such by putting my actual background behind my talent, and get both to match. Not to mention verifying my green screen was lit optimally before actually recording. You can also record live to a QT file that will also have your background keyed in already. Talk about a time saver.

It also has an iOS version so you can do live chroma keys on your mobile device.

If you have an I/O device like my old AJA Kona card, those usually have the capability of doing live keying.

I think from memory Blackmagic Design also had a tool that could pull a live key?

I appreciate the help, fellas! I was googling for days searching the wrong thing. I was assuming I could do it within FCPX and I didn't even think about using outside programs. Thanks!

You can probably still do real-time keying with Quartz Composer, which is a free download as part of 'Graphics Tools for Xcode' from the Apple developer site. It's pretty straightforward, as I recall, if your needs are simple.
