Hello all, a new member here B) I have a problem with FCPX. I am using the trial version to try it before I buy it.

I am not seeing some footage/clips after import. And the footage that is lost is playing fine on the capture screen of FCPX. But when the tape ends and I go look at what was imported there are missing footages. Very strange problem. I also see a flicker on the capture window if I start import while a background task is running. But that does not appear to be causing any other problems. Even if I import the same tape again, I get the same problem, the footage is missing. Anybody else have seen a behavior like this? I am running on a Macbook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014, 2.8 GHz i7). I am connecting the camera via a Thunderbolt hub. And I was not doing much else on the MBP during import.

Never connect a capture device through a hub. Never ever do anything at all during tape capture.

Hey Tom, yeah I leave the machine alone during capture. And I do not use the USB 3.0, SATA etc. ports on the hub during capture either. Only the FireWire port is in use by the HV20. I would buy a Thunderbolt to FW adapter if I am convinced it will help. But the problem seems to only happen at the end of the tape (unless I am missing footages from the middle of the tapes and I have not noticed yet). But all the ones I have noticed so far are at the end. I am missing 4-5 minutes of footage at the end. It is as if FCPX is forgetting to save the last few minutes when the end of the tape is reached. I wonder if anybody else have seen anything like this?

Cheers,
Frank

I experimented more. From what I read a few places iMovie import from HV20 is pretty reliable. So I imported the same tape using iMovie. And it is missing the same portion of the clip! Yet the playback on HV20 and on iMovie is just fine as it was on FCPX. There are no glitches or gaps etc where the clip is being cut off.

Thunderbolt to FW adapter is $28, I ordered one anyway. It would be good to have it as a backup at the worst.

I got my Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter today. I tried to import the same tape. I still have problems with the import. Same clip is missing parts, there is for instance ~4 minuted of footage missing at the end. I rewound the tape to last 6 minutes and imported again, strange that this time the whole 6 minutes imported OK.

I also tried capturing the same tape using Premiere Pro. It captured the whole tape without problems.

I guess I need to use premiere pro or some other tool to import my tapes.
