RD3 in FCPX

Hi - I have rushes recorded on a RED Scarlet which I have transcoded to Proxy Media to view in FCPX on my 2010 MacBookPro, but the playback is jerky. Normally my old Mac (yes, I know I should update) manages to play Proxy Media but well, but not here - any tips?

Were the previous proxies that played well from a Red scarlet?
Were the Proxies made in FCPX? or another program?
(FCPX makes half res proxies, which, if you shot in 4k, gives you 2k proxies. Your data rates MAY still be to high for your hard drive speeds.)
What Resolution are the proxies?
Are the proxies being pulled off an external drive or internal? If external, what are your connections? USB2.0?
So many questions... sorry..
but it could narrow it down.
Also, how full are the hard drives?

Hi - yes, I thought I had found a simple solution, but as always, there is more too it. The proxies were made in FCPX via the plug-in from RED for FCPX. I notice that the original files were recorded in 3840 X 2160 - I presumed that the transcoding would bring this down to 1920 X 1080, but perhaps not. I don't know the resolution of the proxies. In the Inspector it says 3840 X 2160, but I'm not sure if that refers to the original or to the proxy. I can see that it says MODIFY RAW SETTINGS - I am afraid if I do this I will permanently alter the original files. Unfortunately, my external drive (where I keep everything) will be getting fuller and has only 156GB left. The external drive has USB 2.0 and my Mac only has this too. Am rather new to all this, so appreciating the guidance.

Oh, and the proxies that played well before were from a Canon d6 - H.264, I think. I didn't realise the transcoding to proxy would be completely different depending on the original file size.

Are you playing off system drive, or external drive?
What type of external drive, if so?

What version of FCPX are you using? You may have made proxies, but are not using them.
Switch FCPX over to proxies.
IF you are using 10.1 or later...
-in the viewer, click your viewer options. (the light switch looking thing near the top-right of your viewer, then click proxy.
any thing earlier, go to final cut preferences command+comma, and go to play back settings, click use proxy.
let me know if that was the case...
(if you are being givin the option of adjusting raw data, you are probably in Origional/optimzed mode)
I dont' have FCPX in front of me right now, so I'm going blind.

Also, USB 2.0, CAN work for editing, but I would never suggest actually using it. that could be the clincher right there. It should be fast enough to play back one track of 2k proxy though. I'd have to do the math...

Hi - I have just got a new drive: a 1TB Transcend StoreJet 25M3, which is small and reinforced and which I will use for this project only for storage (my 3rd backup). I am copying the rushes onto it now (2 hours). To view the rushes, it may be quicker off this drive, as the other is getting full. I have the most up-to-date version of FCPX (10.1.4) and have set it to play proxy media, but to no avail. By the way, I'm not getting sound either. The editing will be done by a professional, in less reduced format - I just want to be able to see the rushes and start doing some rough edits... Lovely, dog, by the way - looks like he would have been great in my film too

I have just put everything onto my new hard drive and while it plays better, it is still jerky and and there is no sound. I think I need to downsize the footage to 1080 before transcoding it to Proxy media - do you agree? How would I do this?

If you want to make 1080 versions of your Red footage, I would use either Davinci Resolve or Red Cine X. either is fine.
As for your audio issue, all I can think of is that audio was captured with an external device, and has yet to be sync'd. but it could be a billion other things.
A usB 3 drive into a Usb 2.0 capable computer, would still be on my "not recommended for editing list."
As a long shot, you may try clicking "better performance" as well.
(the top featured article is about a red workflow, lucky you!)
(Sam has a lot of other great Red workflow videos out in the inter webs, I'd invest some time in watching and reading his articles)
moviola.com/
is also a great place to learn about post production. There is a video about data rates and working with 4k which could be helpful.
As for my dog, she's a bit of diva.
all the best,

Ok, I will seek out those two applications and learn about all this through a bit of reading. I know USB 3.0 into 2.0 is not good, but I'm saving up for a Mac with Thunderbolt and a RAID external drive with the same.. still far off getting those, so having to make do. I don't want to change the original footage, just get it so i can view my rushes... The editor I'm sure is capable of editing in most formats...

Hi - am trying to use Red Cine - X Pro to convert to 1080, but it only seems to do this to Quick Time formats of Pro Res etc, which FCPX won't import. I will try DaVinci Resolve, but would appreciate guidance on how to use Red's software, which seems bewildering. I can playback well using the Red Player, so it's not a question of computing power. I would like to do some rough edits on FCPX, however.
