No comments so far upon the implications of 'Photos' on FCPX? Alex4d?

tides high, since the first glimpses of Photos appeared on the net ...
my personal, unscientific summary:
iPhoto users happy, Aperture users willing to [strike]commit sui[/strike] switch immediately …
(didn't we FCPX users had some similar discussions, 2-3y ago? ;) )

but ...
again, just my personal, vague impression: it looks like, Apple delivers a 'frame work' for the masses (with actual focus on 'organizing' less 'processing'), and opens the [strike]APIs[/strike] doors to 3rd party plug-ins for the 'special' needs ... reminds me of ... again

Mr Gollner, did you already dig into it in your special way, any findings as you did with iMovie?

This 'extensions'-thingie feeds my amateurish curiosity ... ???

... anyone?

If you read Apple's web page, and recent comments, they know, and have no worries about pro users going to Lightroom. You'll see many Aperture users going to Lightroom, some go to Photos. Personally, I'll be running Aperture for a long time to come. No reason to switch to anything. As for third party plugins, only time will tell.

Several tech review sites have used Photos and published reports. It is also in the latest Yosemite beta version. So there is plenty of public information out now.

Again, I need the tools and smart searches in Aperture. Aperture will run on the next several OSX updates, for those like me, no reason to switch to anything for a long time to come.

I simply can't see FCPX not see a Photos library. I'm not worried.

I've been a Photoshop user since probably Photoshop 6. I've tried Lightroom and it did not meet my needs. I think I'll stick with Photoshop CS6. I do not like how I have to rent the newer Photoshops if I want to use them, though.

Any thoughts about Pixelmator and Photos as an editor/organizer combo?

Obviously, I wasn't clear in my first post, mentioning Alex G's special findings:

I tried to reflect on e.g. this:
alex4d.com/notes/item/future-fcpx-hidden-in-imovie

... not upon what infos are avial in Apple's marketing material for 'Photos'.

My assumption is, digging into the 'parts' of Photos, experts as Alex could find some hidden gems upon the future of FCPX.

How you organize and process your photo collections wasn't on my aganda with this post .... ;)
But interesting anyhow ...

As a long (seems like a life long - since vs 2) user of Pshop, since they went up into the clouds and wanted silly money for the privilege of joining them, I looked for a genuine alternative and found Pixlemator. In a word, brilliant. In another few words, inexpensive, highly featured, who needs Pshop? Not me. Throughly recommend it. (No connection: just a user)

Yes, I'm a huge Pixelmator fan. But it does lack some of the higher end functions some folks need. I think Affinity Photos will fill that gap, and Adobe will have some troubled times. I love having the two alternatives. Having spent the morning with Affinity Photos, it is not nearly as intuitive or easy as Pixelmator, but it is way much higher end workflow. I think the market needs the two, like iMovie and FCPX, there is need for both out there. But PS is just outdated, slow, and once you pay for a full two years of subscription, you've begun to get ripped off.

Having just taken a qucik look at Affinity I think you're right, Ben. It seems (although I need to delve deeper) to have higher end features than pixelmator and I also agree there is room for both. Only downside: another chunk of software learning coming up!

I had fun playing around with Affinity Photo this morning, but I'm sticking with Pixelmator.

I also got to play around with Apple's new Photo application this morning. Not on my Mac, but on a vendor's machine, for about 20 minutes. VERY nice. Most reviewers and skeptics are selling it way short. I found it more powerful than expected, more features still there than expected. I give it 6-12 months of growth from both Apple and 3rd party developers, and it will be pretty powerful, and yet still really simple to use. I see only a SMALL handful of users (very high end pros) going to Lightroom, or sticking with Aperture. Can't wait for it to go public and I can have it on my production workstation. Trust me, it is super slick, super easy, and has power.

perhaps a silly question, but in regards to Extensions, could/would a program like Pixelmator "extend" into Photos? If so, I'm super excited for the future.

I hope my understanding of "extensions" is on the right track.

All the best,

With these interesting new apps arriving it's great that we finally have the monopoly of PShop being seriously challenged. We are getting a genuine choice at last depending on our needs and preferences. I think Adobe did us all a favor by floating up into the clouds.

Very excited to see where this program goes. If third party developers are able to build plugins inside Photos, it will be a game changer. I desperately want to use SilverEFX Pro without leaving Photos. If this is possible, Lightroom and Aperture would be dead to me :-)

I really like Apples new approach to software. Build it simple and fast, but give developers the ability to make incredible plugins for it. As a user, I get to bolt on whatever tools I need to make the best software for my needs.

As of this time there is no "external editor" for Photos. I'm really hoping we get that. That is the major function that would be a make or break for me. Any beta testers out there, please put in that request!

Although an "external editor" option would definitely be nice, I'm more interested in having plugins like NIK Software and Alien Skin work right inside photos! Maybe Apple will be nice and give use both these options :-)

It's currently pretty limited... If you have pixelmator, drag a picture into a mail message or text edit. You'll see a little "markup" menu button on the upper right of the picture when you hover your cursor over it. Click it and select the pixelmator repair tool. Very basic, but very cool possibilities...

Can't sleep? Try this: fcpxpert.net ;-)

Thanks for thinking of me, but I couldn't reveal any results of my investigation of Photos because its only available as part of the OS X developers programme. I'm looking forward to when it is officially released!

So not having played with Photos, but reading lots of reviews and thinking about Apple's recent direction in changing frameworks and UI kits for interactions with iOS/OS, I think this is only the beginning, much like the changes to FCP.

One interesting facet of Photos is that it uses the same Hard Links/Sym Links as FCPX does.
When you import your libraries from iPhoto or Aperture, only a Hard link is created, meaning it is not actually copied, but links to the original media files. This saves hard drive space. Even if you then delete the original files from iPhoto/Aperture they are not actually deleted because Photos now has a Hard link (ownership) of the media as well. This also allows you to continue to use the older programs. Your meta-data info is also available, but Photos changes some aspects, so some workarounds are needed. Wouldn't be surprised to see some of these added later.

As to extensions, Apple has stated that they will be limited in function and that they have to built in on both ends of the apps. For a simple action, then you could do it in the host app, but for major changes, you would still need to export to the full app and then re-import.

One API hook I would like to see is "Round tripping" to other apps. Not sure it will ever happen, but would be nice. At least do it for all Apple apps, yes please;-)

The new frameworks also allow for "Continuity" so you can move back and forth from iOS to OS.
As these new frameworks go into operation is where I think lots of the bugs are coming from. Growing pains.

Pixelmator is my go to photo editor these days. The Pixelmator team seems to have a very good relationship with Apple and I think we will see extensions happen.
Decided to stop the bloodletting to Adobe after CS4 and I haven't used it in over 2 years. Did not even install CS4 on my rMBP.

Wish Apple would give more free iCloud drive space. Photos and video files can really eat up GBs. Still, not having to worry about photos disappearing from the cloud, having access to full resolution photos on all devices and being able to send oversize files up to 5GB using Mail drop are all good things.
Well that's my wooden nickel of opinion.
Hope this helps, Greg
