Digitalizing old video-8 recordings

I'm trying to digitalize some old home videos from video-8 recordings, using my VCR player a USB capture adapter (that does not come with a program) and then capture it in quicktime player.

The problem is that the picture keeps jumping around and the quality is horrible! Does anybody know the problem? I am pretty sure it is captured in Pal, but it doesn't even seem like I can change formats inside of Quicktime video capture?

Please help.

It says that it is recorded in 30,4 FPS, could this have something to do with it? Not sure I can even change that though.

I suppoce I should have bought one of the video cards that came with a soft wear instead.. :pinch:

Specifically what hardware and software are you using?
What version of OS X are you using?
How much RAM?
What GPU?

I've used the Canopus ADVC110 hardware before which captures straight into FCPX.
These units are often found on eBay so if you're after a reliable quality capture I'd suggest you look at this.

I was hoping that this hardware would do that when I bought it as well, but nothing is showing up in Final Cut or in Avid.

Alternativly could I find an app to capture the video instead of using quicktime? Does anyone know of any good ones?

QuickTime Pro 7 should work just fine. Roxie makes a product to capture from analog sources. I know both Blackmagic and AJA have free capture software, but I think that only works with pro decks that spit out SMPTE timecode.

I've had luck (using different hardware) capturing with the old iMovie '09 if you still have a copy available. FCPX and another tool I tried refused to capture due to timecode breaks. At least I think it was timecode breaks that caused the issues. iMovie '11 might work, too. The current version of iMovie did not with the hardware I was using.

Forget about the Roxio stuff it's just garbage.
The Canopus stuff works fine.

I do quite a bit of digitisation from tape and echo the Canopus route.

I keep an old Windows XP PC with the Canopus NX capture card just for tasks like this. The results are worth it.

If you want to capture directly to a Mac then the Black Magic Intensity Extreme is good.

Thanks for all the advice!
I talked to some people on another forum as well about this topic and they said that the best way to keep optimal quality is actually to transfer to DV, and then import it to an editing software from there. So I'll probably look more into that as well :)

How is that possible? FCPX needs to see timecode before it will directly capture anything. I've always needed to capture using other apps because it's something that FCPX just won't do unless it sees that silly timecode.

I do have one somewhere but haven't used it with FCPX.
The unit I have creates a TOD TC when powered on.
So at least TC is there. To capture those tapes you can use other apps as well.

The Canopus device(s) actually do this analog to DV conversion.

Just digitized about 4 dozen analog tapes with the Canopus 110. Aside from one damaged cassette, FCP X had no issues capturing.

Have you tried Vidi? It's free and will probably capture the footage just fine.

Sorry, didn't see you had a USB capture device. I think Vidi is FireWire only. Although the FireWire to thunderbolt adapter works.
