Hi I am new here.
I am profoundly deaf and have been asked to add subtitles to Final cut Pro X. Can you please kindly advise me the best subtitle editor if possible?
The aim is to use with Vimeo and YouTube

Hi Simon,
None of the above suggestions will help you in your case.
Use the free Jubler app to create subtitles for the final movie. Save these subtitles as SRT and upload this to your Vimeo or YouTube video.
If you want to create your subtitles within FCP X use a Motion title with 1 text entry only.
There are apps which can use the FCPX XML to retrieve the text from those subtitles and convert them to SRT.
You can download my X-Title Importer. It will give you a decent Motion tile template for subtitles. It is free.

Andreas,
maybe I am missing something. Why would dh_subtitlex not do the job? I did subtitles with it before and it worked very well. Uploaded to Youtube with the subtitles burnt in. Anything wrong with that? Or do you just do it another way because you want OPTIONAL subtitles?
Thx,
Sebastian

I was assuming the subtitles would be CC style (means you can turn on off)
In this case DH_SubtitleX won't work since currently there is no way to retrieve the subtitles/timings out of the project.
It's not that I don't like DH_SubtitleX, I created the one and only app which allows to import timed text for DH_SubtitleX subtitles into FCPX.
@ Simon
Please let us know what you exactly want to achieve. I assumed that you want to create switchable subtitles for Vimeo and YouTube – maybe I was wrong.
If you want burned in subtitles the workflow inside FCPX is quite easy as I described above. Use a title template which matches subtitle needs – not something animated or lower third stuff. My free TextUp titles do a good job there for some 1000 people.
Using a title template can have some advantages there compared to a subtitle generator. FCPX has a meanwhile good working text search which can be helpful in your case. This won't work with generators.
If you want to get the switchable Closed Caption type in Vimeo and YouTube it will be a bit more compiicated.
One thing you can do is to use Jubler to create the subtitles. It's easy to learn compared to other apps of this kind and it's free.
If you have created your subtitles in FCPX and want to make them work like Closed Captions in Vimeo and YouTube you first have to export an XML from your project. From there you can use a software which can convert this XML into a workable SRT file which can be uploaded to the matching video.
One of the free apps is my X-Title Extractor. ( www.spherico.com/filmtools/TitleExchange/XTE/XTE%20Install.dmg )
I'm working with subtitles and also hearing impaired people (stations) since more than a decade and I'm still deeply impressed how they manage to create subtitles for hearing impaired or deaf people.
Some of the "normal" ones of us should check their subtitles with sound turned off – you'll see what happens.
Anyway - you can send me an email (kiel(at)spherico.com)

Thank you for your reply. You guys are amazing!!
I need to make a few things clear, which I should have done at first.
I will take video shots and edit them with people signing in British Sign Language.
There will be no sound, since all our clients are deaf or hard of hearing.
The input text will be permanent therefore it cannot be turn on or off, upload to Vimeo, YouTube, DVD and memory stick.
Can the text be in any colour and can I line them up anywhere on the video? two/three/four lines of text.
Finally the quickest way to input text.
Many thanks
