why has my short cut"?/" stopped working. I must 've changed something but do not know what and it's driving me mad as I use this short cut all the time to check the edit I have just made.

Two separate shortcuts: / is play selection and ? (or Shift-/) is play around current position. You could go to the Command Editor in the FCP menu and make sure it's set to default.
