Denver Riddle from colorgradingcentral.com sent out last night (here...) a mail with this illustration:

plus this line:

"But I think you will see that it has the potential to change
the Final Cut Pro X experience."

whooo?! :woohoo:

for an amateur like me, this looks like the famous 3-color-wheel, I heard of some missing in FCPX ...

This is much, much more than the outdated 3-colour wheel. Looking forward to this.

The physics of the universe doesn't upgrade. Color wheels are based on science. Not sure how they're outdated. They're still easier and more intuitive than the color board.

If these colour wheels display on the very image that you are supposed to be grading then I'm not interested.

… but how you handle them - "nothing heavier than air can fly!" ...
I guess, that's what Ronny meant.

… and for me, a 'color-EQ' (too much red? Minus it!) is no bad concept for a UI ....
We'll see, what Mr Riddle comes up with ............

In a way, I agree. But I certainly think it should be optional.

For the most part, FCPX has an inspector that is designed to house these type of tools, I would like to see that area utilised as per normal.

I asked Denver the same thing and he said it is not an overlay in the viewer. Which is good to hear.

They're outdated simply because they're not included in FCPX. I thought you knew Ronny better than that. ;)

You really should learn to carefully read a post.

I never said color wheels are outdated. I said: this is much more than the outdated color wheel. And if you look at the screenshot you will notice these wheels are quite different from the ones we know from, say, FCP7. If you don't understand the nuance in this I will be happy to spell it ;)

Not sure how else to interpret "... the outdated color wheel." That means the "color wheel" is "outdated", correct?

I meant the color wheels as we know them are outdated when you look at how color wheels are interpreted in this plugin. That's why I said: this is more than the outdated color wheel.

I don't see it. I'd have to try it out, cause I don't see anything improved over a set of traditional color wheels with a puck to move. Maybe I'm just ignorant. Yes, looks fancy, but don't see any improved utility in it.

Yeah, I'm trying to work out what the depth-stacked-wheels are for. My head's saying '3D LUT', but I'm not convinced that can be right.

It looks like either via this, or Resolve, my brain is going to be scrambled this year. Hurray!

Excellent observation!

Fun thing is:

I do see the same arrangement as in Resolve, but, in the right 'circle tunnel' you do see 4 'pucks' (as Ben calls them) - as in FCPX' color board - which make no sense, each 'wheel' represents puck#2,3,4 ... ???

Plus: How do you handle a 3D-interface with a 2D mouse/trackpad? Ok, Herr Krause did know, 20y ago, but still …  a riddle. Which reminds me on my own reflections, how to add 'tic-' and 'logic-based'-behaviors to Motion: a three dimensional interface could solve some problems... Or create new ones.

… this sneak preview is excellent marketing by DR, so far

It's great to hear that this interface won't be an image overlay like some other ones have been. supposedly FXPlug3 support allowed for more complex plug-in interfaces. Perhaps that's what we're seeing here.

It's true. There have been a few changes to FXPlug 3, that being one of them.

Here's a link to a thread on REDUSER.net teasing the product as well

www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?127...-Tool-Coming-to-FCPX

The OP there is clear that this is a screen cap from the promotional video, and not the interface itself. That's probably caused some of the confusion.

Unfortunately by Page 3, the thread had devolved into colourist elitism and Denver defending himself in a personal quarrel over an unrelated issue- so the thread is now locked. It's too bad, with Denver posting we might have teased some more details out of him...

It's a little sad to see how established professionals often seem to feel threatened when new technologies emerge. We have seen this happening when Avid launched its editing platform and later when legacy FCP was introduced. We are seeing it again since the launch of FCP X.

Making complex technologies accessible to a larger user base is not threatening at all. After all it's always the skills of the person using the technologies that will make a production exceptional or not. If Denver succeeds in creating a plugin that will allow people who don't want to learn complex grading applications increase their grading capabilities inside FCP X I think this is a good thing.

Well said Ronny.

As long as you try to leave options for how people would like to work, I don't think it's a bad thing.

People will always get defensive if they feel their profession has been dumbed down and made more accessible to those with less skills. You see that happening everywhere.

However, if these options were around at an earlier point in time, many of us would have made our start that way too.

Besides, it doesn't really matter how intuitive and fast you try to make something, there will always be a need in understanding the theory and how things relate to each other because simplified solutions will only take you so far. All it does is often an easier learning curve to newcomers, I don't see a problem with that. :)

I totally agree, Simon. Without people who understand the theories of editing, audio or color correction you will never produce stunning movies, even with the fastest and most intuitive technology in the world. But if you have that knowledge and someone comes up with a tool that is more accessible and that can allow you to make your work easier, I think we should embrace it and not oppose to it. This is the case for FCP X as well.
