Media Management Woes After Update

Hello,

Having trouble figuring out the media management changes with 10.1. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've spent hours scouring the web for answers, so now I turn to you. Will try to make it as brief as I can.

1. Upon updating, ALL events/projects were grouped under an event called "Updated Projects" within a Library called "LaCie" (name of the external drive). I want to separate out the components of the various projects I was working on under Libraries that I create. So I create a library titled "New Library" and that's as far as I get. I have not figured out how to move the events/projects I want from the machine-created updated files. Drag and drop doesn't work, so I'm at a huge loss. Anyone? Buehler?

2. I had a second external drive for backing up everything (events and projects) which I did easily manually with drag and drop. I have no idea how to do that now. I'm not even sure what question to ask because other than How do I back up my stuff to the second external drive?

3. How do you properly delete a library within FCPX? I don't get option to trash it from the drop down menu, so I had to go into the drive and delete it from there, which I doubt is the best way to do it.

I have more (like what about all the old root files that I hid under folders like "EVENTS-UNUSED" to prevent them from opening when I opened FCPX...

Thanks to anyone willing to wade into the muck!

Your questions 2&3, you backup libraries by copying them to another location, manually dragging or using backup software. And yes, you delete libraries just like any other file now... drag to trash. :-)

Thank you for that link. It does address some of issues I'm having. I did read all the Apple/FCPX help docs, but some of it confused rather than clarified things for me. That's just me.

Glad it helped. And, no, not just you... there's a lot of info in the help docs, and it can be overwhelming. You'll get it sorted out. You also might try exporting individual project XML, and then importing it into a new library. That should bring in all the media you need for the cut. Worth a try if you get stuck sorting out which media should of with which project...

Aside from the excellent tips Charlie has given:

If you have updated all your Events and Projects into one single Library and you want to assign specific Events and Projects to specific Libraries you can do this easily inside FCP X:

Select any Event (or Project) and choose File > Move Event to > Library...

This will open a Finder window in which you create a new Library and set a storage location for that Library. When you press OK the selected Event(s) will be moved into that Library.

If you have already created a new Library you can use the same command to move Events and projects into the existing Library.

I'm gradually getting the hang of it. The big problem was that my hard drive died very suddenly and I had to update to 10.1 without any time preparation. It's kind of been like straightening out a room after all the windows were left open during a storm.
