Placing video in the image of an iPad? was created by kschmucker
I have created a video of an app running on an iPad using the new Yosemite-iOS8 movie recording feature in QuickTime Player with a tethered iPad.
The final video that I need would show this video playing in the image of an iPad.
I am not even sure what this effect is called, so that I can look up a tutorial on that topic. Is this picture-in-a-picture, some kind of drop zone effect, or something else?
Can someone point me in the correct direction?
Final Cut Pro X 10.1.4; Motion 5.1.2

Do you want that composited onto a still image of an iPad? Then check this out:
support.apple.com/kb/PH15862
Or into a video background plate with camera movement? I found this tutorial quickly, but I am sure there are a buttload of others out there:
Or do you want to create a 3D animation of an iPad and drop your screen capture into that?
Then buy yourself a copy of MotionVFX's mObject and download their free pack of Apple device models and go from there:

Thanks. I want to composite it on top of a still image of an iPad. I will use the Apple KB reference you provided.

If you have Coremelt's SliceX they show tutorials for how to do this.
vimeo.com/channels/coremeltslicex/page:1
You should be able to approximate the same effect using the simple mask provided in FCPX.
