Copying an event to a new managed ,media library was created by Tom Wolsky
Is this working correctly?
I have a a library with an event with external media. I have Import preferences set to copy media into the library location. I make a new library and set the properties to managed media. I drag an event from the original library (external media) into the new library (managed media). I've effectively importing media into the new library. Based on my library properties and import preferences, shouldn't the media be copied into the library? It isn't. I have run a consolidate operation. Why two steps when the set up would indicate one step?
Thanks.

Hey Tom,
The import preferences only apply to importing new footage in a Library, not to copying media between Libraries.
When you drag an Event from a Library with external media into a Library with managed media on the same drive, only the links will be copied over and not the physical media. To copy over the physical media you need to consolidate.

Thanks Ronny. So it's working as designed, however contradictory the design may seem. Not sure why this behavior is thought a good idea. Seems misleading to the user. He thinks the media's in the library, zips the library, and sends off a dummy file with dead links.

I agree it can be misleading. That's why I cannot stress enough that before sending any Library off to a different location, or even before archiving any Library, one should always press the Consolidate button if you want to make sure that all the media are in the same place.

I always check the file location in case I consolidated to the wrong place. Thanks again.

That's a very wise habit. Media management in the new FCP X is extremely versatile, but it also requires paying good attention to where media get stored.
