You can add markers to the storyline. Not sure what the purpose is, but you can also add an adjustment layer and add markers to that, or of course you can add markers to an audio track.

Tom, if I add a marker by pressing M it will add a marker to the clip. It will move with the clip.
I would like to add a marker to the storyline but linked to fixed tie and note to a specific clip.
i.e. mark1 at 1 min, mark 2 at 3 min etc.
Is this possible?

You can't. A marker has to be attached to a clip; that's why an adjustment layer might work for what you want or any other filler like a gap clip on a secondary.

Edit: OOps, Tom's reply was faster.
What Tom said solves your problem. Just add an adjustment layer or an empty audio clip (or have the audio reduced) from beginning to end of your timeline. Select it. Now M will set a marker to that clip instead of to your main clip. It will stay in place when you move things around in your storyline (unless you move the very first clip, that is, in which case you can then manually move the marked clip to the beginning again).

Or use a Gap Clip as a connected clip. Create a 1 second Gap clip at the start in the primary storyline, attach a gap clip to that, which you set to the duration of the project. Add markers to that. I, as well as most of us here, hope to see Timecode Ruler markers very, very soon. In the mean time, there's your various workarounds.

Unfortunately you can't connect a gap unless you build it into a secondary, which is kind of clumsy to do, but if you can it's an excellent marker solution that had no overhead.

Why there are no Timecode Ruler markers already in FCPX simply baffles me. That and a realistic, useful timecode generator/reader. Baffling...

Thank you guys.
Looks like adjustment layers can do it...
And it saves me time for other stuff to...thanks for mentioning them to me.
