Best solution for storage? was created by minnowmedia
We have been shooting a documentary for two years and the footage is scattered on six different LaCie hard drives. We want to consolidate all the media before we begin editing.
Editing FCP 7 on a MacBook 10.9.3
What is the best way to go?
Thanks.

I use a Pegasus Promise R4 and love it. You're going to want to keep all those drives as backup archives, but load everything onto a single fast RAID for editing. You don't need to go all out with the Pegasus if your budget is tight, but IMO hard drives are something you shouldn't skimp on. It's like driving a car with crappy tires that could blow - you get the idea. If it's a feature length, you will need at least 4TB, and most likely more, but that's just a guess since I don't know any more information.
Also, while I'm sure FCP7 is tried and true, if you haven't started editing yet, you may want to consider adopting a more modern NLE. It'll save you hours of transcoding and the advantages easily outweigh the negatives. Having cut several docs in FCPX, I'd be inclined to recommend stepping up, but if you wanted to use something else, that's up to you. I do hear that Prelude has some good organization features.
Good luck!
