lower third logo insert on white background reveals logo edge when viewed on PC was created by katrien
Hi, I edit on a mac. I recently did a movie for a client, where at a point I inserted a logo on a white band (as a lower third). The band is white, the logo edge is white and on my mac it blends seamlessly. Also: the exported movie looks fine. The client, however, has PC's and reports that they still see the logo's edge, so the white from the logo doesn't match the white from the background. How can I solve this? Thank you!

I basically see two options:
• create that lower-third bar in some designated 'paint'-app, such as Pixelmator; get rid of of the white edge of the logo; compose bar logo in that app; insert as png-overlay to your project.
• that white bar, you create with the FCPX solid color generator? double-click in the InfoPane/Generator the color selector; the color-picker will appear; select the magnifier; hover over the logos white edge - could be, that white differs from 'plain white', and the diff. gammas on Mac + PC show that difference...

Hi Karsten,
Thanks for your reply. Very useful.
Is there a way to check how a movie looks on PC? On my mac, it all looks just fine. I need to make sure it's still fine on PC, also for future projects.
Many thanks,
K

Is this a mac/pc difference or is it a calibrated monitor vs an uncalibrated monitor difference? When I see differences in colors I usually find an uncalibrated or at least not recently calibrated machine. However, most of my experience is with stills.

Macs and PCs use different gammas to display with. And different monitors can show different hue biases (even calibrated, as computer monitors are not that precise with video/photos, only comparing print). So if you're producing video or stills to be shown on computers, don't expect every computer to show the same gamma curve (hue).

hmm, as Ben and marchyman meanwhile (timezones... hey!
) told you:
even when calibrated, two monitors = two pictures :woohoo:
So, I would prefer two methods:
• avoiding the problem - no 'white-on-white in hope of matching'; I described two options in my first reply (prepping pic in a paint app/using the color picker)
• generally: learn to use the scopes, never trust your eyes!
... for solid colors, a simple 'trick' (Warning! Hobbyist corner…) is to play with the brightness-controls of your monitor: go low, go high, you'll soon see differences where none were before! In your case, white, just lower the brightness, not just a bit, turn it minimum... you probably notice the same 'borders' as your client.
(ok, a professional will kill you, when you 'play' with the settings of his monitor... but, hey, I'm just a soccer-dad, talking smart about gamma curves ... )
