I have imported some files to an event (from 5d markiii and gopro2), check the optimize media box...
FCPX imports the files, starts transcoding the first of many files and then stops in the middle of first file...forever.
How to I get it to transcode everything???
Thanks
ps- this is my first post in this forum

If you select some of the clips individually, does the transcoding hang in each case?

Try the Camera Archive function, see if that works.

All these files play fine both in QT and FCP timeline/viewer. I can even ply all of then in sync in multicam mode. The problem is that my macbook pro struggles to read them smoothly (I guess because of the realtime transcoding of both the GoPro files and the .h264). That s why I want to transcode them all to pores before I start editing.
I tried to transcode them one by one and the very first Gopro file hang at 30%.
Then I tried to transcode only a single 5Dmarkiii file and it worked. But the second one hanged at 70%.
Next one hanged at 50%. Tried this last one again a couple of times and it always hangs at 50%.
All of them are in an external HD.
Again, they all play fine...
Please advise
Thank you

The files are all in an external usb3 HD.
I have also tried coping the files to my mac hd (just to discard a possible external HD fault) and the transcode process hangs at exact same %.

- GoPro transcoded to ProRes
- 5DMarkiii (h.264) native
But I still wonder why FCPX does not transcode my files...

Thank you for your advices.
I am already having problems. My MBP is choking and video is lagging.
I have done so much work syncing this files for multicam.
Is there a way to substitute the native files with the transcoded ones without loosing the edit?
Thank

There is something wrong. Even when I only import and afterwards in the browser I right click and choose Transcode Media, it somehow stops in the middle of the process...some files at 33%, others at 50% etc. Almost no files gets done.
Any ideas?
ronny courtens wrote: Don't optimize while importing on a slower machine. First import, then select your imported clips, R-click the selection and choose Transcode Media > Optimized media. When you do it this way at least you know where things go wrong.

Where is your Library located? On the external drive?
And how much free space do you have left on your system drive and on the external drive?

Something is interfering with that process that shouldn't. Any third party software or plugins we could attribute this too?

Ronny, my library is on the external drive.
System Drive = 64GB free space
External Drive = 726GB free space
When imported the files, I chose to leave the files in their location.
One more question: Where is FCPX putting the transcoded files???
Thank you
ronny courtens wrote: Okay, I just wanted to make sure it was not USB2.

These are my trials, in steps:BenB wrote: OK, this is starting to creep me out. So, try importing just ONE file, then optimizing.
Step1:
- Created a new library in the system disk
- Imported file A1 (one that could not be transcended before)
- File imported OK, then transcoded OK!!!
Step2:
- Imported another 5 files (A2,3,4 & 5), transcoded all of them at once OK!!!
Step3:
- Created a new library in the external usb3 disk
- Imported file A1 (same file as in step1)
- File imported OK, transcode HANG at 64% !!!
- Imported file A2, transcode HANG at 79% !!!
I guess the problem is related to the external drive?
Something just came to mind...could it be that this drive is FAT32 formatted and the files stop transcoding because of file size limitation of 4GB???

I think the fastest way to solve this is to start all over again. Just format the drive to HFS+ (Mac OS Extended), this will of course erase everything on it. Then import and transcode again.

I'll copy the folders to a new drive, properly formatted
In the meanwhile I had managed to work with proxy files...as just as a side note, I am loving the multicam functionality in FCPX...Really cool.
Best, joni
ronny courtens wrote: Yes it is related to the external drive. NEVER use a Windows formatted drive for working with FCP X.

Happy to hear you like the multicam workflow in FCP X. I think everything will run smoothly from a properly formatted drive
Happy editing!
