SSD question

SSD question was created by dkag7
In the past I edited on my OS system.
The OS was installed on a 4 HDD raid 0 (internal mac pro 5,1).
I got about 4-500 speeds R&W. Editing went smoothly having the media and OS on the same raid HDD.

Now what I have done is installed 2 SSD and made a raid 0 out of them.
My speeds are about 500 R&W.
I am thinking of getting 2 more (also put them internally) and either:

1. Make a separate raid out of these 2 new SSD for media, or
2. Join all 4 SSD as one raid 0 for media and the OS for even better speeds.

I will be editing 5 cam HD multicam clips, hence the probability needed for a bit better speeds.

So the question I have is will SSD work better than HDD as a 4 drive raid having the OS and all apps on the same drive as media?

thanks
kurt

Kurt,
Have you read Larry Jordan's article on configuring your system?

Figure out the throughput you need and make sure your total system will support or exceed the video requirements. After that no amount of transfer speed will make any difference except maybe GPU loading.
All legacy MPs were SATA 2 buses.
There are PCIe cards with flash based blades that are faster than SATA. If you go this route, make sure it is installed with enough lanes to meet transfer speed of flash blades.
Don't forget that no RAID is considered back-up so Back up/ back-up…
Hope this helps, Greg

Whichever direction you choose, keep your media on separate drive(s) than your OS. The OS needs system resources to manage itself, and although SSD's are speedy, you don't want the OS running on the same drive(s) that you are reading and writing to your media files from.
