Hey All-
I have a long series of videos I'm working on, English and French Subtitled. All the English have been exported as ProRes Masters, then I encode them in Compressor to high bit-rate h.264 files for the client.
So- my issue is after putting the subtitles on- when I go to Export the Master file, the dialogue box comes up saying "Preparing Media for Share". Then once that's gone the Background Tasks meter goes to zero... and then nothing. It's just stuck there, and I've left it for up to 20min and never gets any further.
I've found a workaround for delivery- if I "Send to Compressor" then the encode will go thru, but I just find this issue frustrating. Any ideas?

Hey Marcus,
No idea what may be the cause of this, never have seen this happening. As you are able to export via Compressor, this means there is nothing wrong with the Project or the clips. It's just the Background task that seems to be stuck. When you get an unexpected behavior like this you might try to just close FCP X and open it again. This clears the caches and tasks that are kept in memory, and it might solve the issue.

Thanks Ronny. Yes, it is very weird. And if I go back to the same sequence without subtitles it exports fine. I've tried restarting both FCPX and my Mac. I've been copying and pasting the subtitle from one sequence to the next, so I'm going to try generating a fresh one and see if that helps.
I've been running into a lot of slowdowns/lockups lately.
I'll find that when I go to so a search in the single event for this job, the FCPX dialogue box will come up and start to load up every Project in the Event. And this will take a few minutes...
Also, with this multi cam job I'm doing- I'm copying and pasting colour corrections from one camera within the multi cam editor to another. So copying color corrects for Camera A, Camera B, and Camera C from Interview Guy1 to the Interview Guy2. Now, if I haven't already loaded the 2 or 3 Projects from Interview Guy1 (double clicked on them so they load into the Project window) then when I COMMAND-C to copy the color correct from Interview Guy1, the Dialogue box opens and it starts loading all 3 Projects for Interview Guy1- and gets stuck. The dialogue box never closes.
But if I do open all the Projects beforehand, then COMMAND-C, no problem.
It just seems like that Dialogue box is spending a lot of time on my screen these days, loading Projects into memory.

Maybe it's time to refresh your FCP X preferences.
Also try running Activity Monitor when these things happen, just to see if it's not a lack of available RAM that is causing the slowdowns. Just thinking out loud because I honestly don't have clue

I hope it's not lack of RAM- with 64GB in this nMP!

I think 64 GB should be sufficient
Just close FCP X and launch it again while holding the ALT and the CMD keys pressed down. You will see a message asking if you want to delete your FCP X preferences. Confirm and let FCP X start up. It will start up empty and it will reset the Preferences to their default setting, so you need to check these and modify them where needed. But this usually solves unexpected behavior like this.

Delete all project generated media, perhaps. That's weird.

Just an update on this- I'd been doing all my subtitles within a Secondary Storyline- I find it's easier to time and modify the titles that way.
So I tried breaking apart my Subtitle Storyline and low and behold it exports fine.
As an extra bonus I then RE-Storylined all the Subtitles. Once it exported ok, but after that it once again hung at 0% on Export.
Odd.

Hi Marcus,
Thank you for the feedback. Odd indeed, but good to know.
