Hello,

Yesterday I got 6TB arriraw footage (.ari) - No, I didn't receive any ProRes. I am facing some
difficulties, until today had never worked with arriraw files. My query is... how to bring it into FCPX?
Saw on some blog I need to use DaVinci Resolve to transcode .ari files in ProRes. But I don't have Resolve
on my work station... I know I can use ARRIRAW converter and export as .dpx format, but FCPX does not
support dpx files .. so, i fugered out I have two choices but I don't know whats better.

Bring .ari files into Adobe Premiere CC / Autodesk Smoke to transcode to ProRes OR use Arriraw
Converter, export as dpx and then use color to render out as ProRes.

What is the best choice? Will I lose metadata informations going this way?

HELP!!

thx

Davinci Resolve Light is free and really easy to use, the only problem you will face is that .ari files are GPU intensive so the transcode can take a wile, also you will have to chose between exporting log or using a LUT to convert the image to rec 709 color space. I will recommend reading the Arri Raw PDF to get an idea, but what you should do is take back that media and request ProRes transcodes to your Post productor or post supervisor.

As it's been a while since I've dealt with Arriraw, I can't remember if the metadata carries back to FCP X from Resolve, but my guess is it does. If you do end up having to transcode yourself, the one thing to keep in mind is to make sure you do the XML round trip to FCP X from Resolve as this will allow you to relink to the Arriraw in Resolve no matter what.

As for the LUT or no LUT choice, if you are intending to finish in FCP X, then I would export out ProRes 4444 if you have the space, then batch assign the Arri LUT built in to FCP X, that way you have the native colorspace to finish with. The good thing is you don't have to render the built in LUT in FCP X.

I bought Glue tools plugins... think it was the best choice.

I thought thad GlueTools didn't worked with FCPX.... well, seems reader expensive solution given the fact that Davinci Light is free.

You're right sperezrleon. GlueTools doesn't work with FCPX. But we decided to edit into FCP 7. Buy it wasn't my decision. We downloaded Davinci resolve also.

thanks

You need to make dailies in Resolve. That's pretty much it. There's other ways to make dailies, but they get more expensive and require esoteric software.

You could prob use Gluetools to edit the native files in FCP7, but you would need a monster system to handle the data rate, and it probably would be slower than it needs to be.

Tell production they need to pay for dailies. Arriraw is no joke, it need more post steps.

When dealing with Arriraw, I always get the DIT to give me ProRes 4444. You don't even have to go back to the raw for this if it gets in the way too much, because ProRes 4444 from Arriraw is great for color.
