How do I add text that "sticks" to an object in a video?

I saw this video and thought it must be possible to do with FCPX.

How do you make the text movie with the object, and, how do you add the little line from the object to the text?

P.S. If the video above doesn't work, here's the link:

Thank you for your quick reply! I was just wondering if there were any free or lower cost options available. Thank you for your help!

This is the low cost option.

Mocha Pro, the technology this plugin uses, is roughly $1500.

Otherwise you can keyframe by hand. cheapest but very time consuming.

If there is enough contrast in usable areas, you could do it in Motion, but SliceX is the better tracker.

the low cost option is Motion = 49€/$ ...

(whooo, me years ago, fat man ... )
was a quick test; 'Sherlock' 'cause then it was a fancy effect in the BBC show ...

Motion does a good job, except two things:
• what Ben said: asks for a 'clean' = high contrast tracking point
• doesn't offer real '3D' distortion - when I put my hand in front of me, the graphic should get a lil' bigger.. there's some kind of cheap workaround, utilizing the 4-point-tracker, but that doesn't work in most cases. Then, TrackX is your choice ...

Use Fusion, it is free now and does a great job in tracking, download it from Blackmagic site.
But you have to export your footage and for now it is an Windows app.

just to apply a tracked title/graphic ...
hmmm? seriously? :silly:

Not to mention the learning curve...

You can combine tracking in Motion with keyframing the Scale parameter to fake 3D space. But SliceX is very, very worth the investment.

Yes, complex node-based and free now. I use since 2001 and it can do a lot of things very fast. With 3 nodes it does the job, get it done in less than 5 minutes.
Also, masks are quite powerful in Fusion and can be automated with tracks as well.
