What version of FCPX and OS X are you using?

Known issue...

Although the clips from the Sony X70 are labelled .mxf, the codec is the problem. The X70 is a brand new "pro" version (10-bit 4:2:2 color XAVC) of the AX100/CX100. It even has SDI out, removable XLR handle, 24-bit audio, etc.
There's no 4K but that's coming in the next few months as a (probably paid) firmware upgrade.

The AX/CX models shoot XAVC-S which FCPX imports. The X70 has a better codec - XAVC (or XAVC-L). This is so new that even Sony Vegas won't import it, nor will FCPX or Avid. For some reason Premiere Pro does. And by the way, the XAVC plugin on the Sony website is only for the consumer XAVC-S codec, not this new one.

The 10.1.4 update did not deal with this issue, but just as Canon did for the XF series cameras, "reliable insider rumors" say that Sony will have a plugin for FCPX soon, maybe even later this month.

So, until the plugin surfaces, you have three options:

1. shoot AVCHD - not my first choice. I didn't buy the X70 to not use the great codec.

or use one of Sony's software options:

2. Download the free Sony Catalyst Browse software. This will let you preview the clips, do some color and exposure work on the clips if for some odd reason you want to do it there instead of Final Cut, and convert the clips to ProRes. But, it's a clunky, one-clip-at-a-time workflow on the ProRes conversion.

3. Buy - for $200!!! - Sony Catalyst Prepare. This is like Catalyst Browse but does much more and allows batch conversion.

I'm doing option 2 :-)

Yes .mxf not mfx. Option two is the most acceptable. I'll take it. With all respect thanks again for help.

Glad to help. There's a huge forum on this camera over at dvinfo.net

Just today someone over there posted a claim that he was talking to a Sony Tech Rep today who said rather than a plugin from Sony, "FCPX plans to support (this new codec) ...with an update in January, 2015." Take that with as many grains of salt as you like :-)
