Export is darker than timeline? was created by dfphoto
Hi group, in fcp 7 there used to be a preference for the gamma since quicktime read the outputs as a darker gamma than fcp7 displayed. I'm noticing a similar issue with 10.1.3 and wondered if anyone can help me out.
Thanks again David

If you have Compressor, you can make a custom preset which allows adjusting gamma just like in QT.
Is your export darker when played in QT, or only when uploaded? I find that YouTube darkens my videos noticeably. I now use Vimeo exclusively because there the darkening is almost imperceptible.

Hi thank you for that, sure makes it difficult to judge I am also noticing fcpx changes my skintone color a lot maybe the darkening is responsible but boy delivery is difficult...
I had to make a blueray and talk about a major problem and gamma issues...

Just to be clear, when I export a full master file from FCPX and play it in QuickTime, it looks exactly like it does in my Timeline. If I then use Compressor to covert that to h.264, that h.264 looks just like it does in my Timeline. But after I upload it to YouTube or Vimeo, in their published video the gamma is somewhat darker. In YT it's noticeably darker, Vimeo's gamma shift is just barely noticeable - so I avoid YouTube if I'm given a choice.

just for clarity - remember that while Quicktime is still Apple technology and they support it - the OS has shifted away from QT for it's video processing. It's now all AV Foundation and Core Video, etc.
So much of the color and gamut shifting of the old days is history.
AV Foundation is very modern code. And much more accurate and precise in everything having to do with calculating screen displays.
