OK. Thanks. That is a shift - at least publicly. They've been doing that privately for awhile, including to folks in the press.

As I understand, it works like this. Let's say you sell Version 1 in Q1 and Version 2 in Q4. In between you release Version 1.0.1 and it includes features, then you cannot claim any revenue from any sales made during those quarters until Q4, when Version 2 is released. By shifting to a 1-time purchase or a subscription, it becomes different.
There has been some speculation - never confirmed nor denied - that Apple did not claim any revenue from FCP X until 10.1 was released. Up until 10.1 there was still question of whether or not there would be a charge for the update. I believe the same thing applies to OSX and iOS updates now.
Ironically, this was the entire reason for Avid having to restate revenues, missing the filing deadlines and being delisted from NASDAQ. Nothing nefarious at all. In fact, the actual accounting numbers have been favorable for Avid. This issue was caused by the complexity of their sales model, with individual customers, large contract customers, people with maintenance contracts and those without. Who got updates and who didn't. It just caused a huge mess.
It's less an issue of what Enron did and really one of over-regulation (or overly complex regulation) and the unintended consequences that resulted.

The less than stellar rollout of FCP X was a pretty good deal for Avid. They were smart to offer that deal to disgruntled FCP 7 customers when they did.
Of the Avid users I work with, version 6 is the most popular version of MC. For feature and networks, that version pretty much handles everything they would need since transcoding is still standard practice.
That also must really affect the bottom line.

Don't forget Apple is STILL at NAB and other shows. They've not left, just doing business in a much more economical and efficient way, talking in a more personal way to folks, than anyone else is at their mega-booths.
A point of fact, the last several years of legacy FCP, I was a certified trainer, I travels the country, I taught at more AATC's and privately to corporates, broadcasters, and universities than you can shake a stick at. And NO, Apple NEVER lifted a finger to help, advertise, anything. The help videos were dropped half way through version 6. Folks are delusional about what Apple did to "advertise" FCP7. And even what they did way back then, is totally outdated and ineffectual now.
Not in touch with reality? I WAS the reality of promoting legacy FCP! How many production and post-production facilities did you teach at in over a decade previously?
My final post on this now boring, repetitive, un-constructive thread (yeah, bring on the negative karma, cause you don't have to personally answer for it), FCPX has sold more seats in its first year than FCP7 did in its whole 3. And here we are 3 years later, and FCPX has STILL outsold, each individual year, more seats than FCP7 did in three total.
So what is the problem? Why are folks upset? FCPX is doing fine. It is gaining traction fast. I personally can't teach broadcasters, corporations, universities, and indies fast enough! What's the problem? I don't see a problem.
The sky is not falling, FCPX is not failing in its sales, it is reaching more and more folks very fast.
Mark Sanger can use what he wants, any one who cares needs to stop worrying about Mark, and worry about their own work.
Have a nice day.
