overwrite just video was created by Xan
Hello:
Is it possible to overwrite just the video and maintain the audio of the primary storyline? Or I need to connect that clip without sound to the storyline?
Thanks a lot.

Detach audio of Clip at Timeline. You can also LIFT FROM STORYLINE your clip, So you can Delete or add Another Clip with original audio.

If I understand you correctly you just want to connect the video leaving the audio behind?
If I am right I cant screen grab right now BUT if you look to the left of the timecode/background task window above the story line you will see an arrow. Next to that there are three boxes with a down arrow, you can select just video or just audio and all. The short cuts are
"Shift 1" = all
"Shift 2" = just video
"Shift 3" = just audio
This works with the "Q" "W" and "E" commands too
Hope it helps Sorry I cant screen grab for you. I have a client in who has just popped out.

Sorry, English is not my first language, I just wondering if it is possible to make an overwrite as FCP7, with the audio track untargeted , overwrite only the video in the clip of the timeline ,without affecting the audio.
Thanks
Thanks

You would have to detach the audio first, making it a connected clip, then do a replace edit of only the video.
1- Detach audio, Command+Shift+S
2- Set for video only replace edit, Shift+2
3- Replace From Start, Option+R
There is no way to do it in one command.

thanks a lot!! Anyway I just discovered that if you add a clip as connected clip first and then overwriting it in the timeline, command+option+down arrow, you can keep the original audio intact

1) select video in Event = what
2) set playhead in your Project = where
3) shift-2 = apply only video
3) Q = connect clip to clip in timeline (I memo 'q-nnected')
4) cmd-alt_arrow down = for 'cosmetics' to have a single, solid timeline.
no need to detach audio manually, no need for compounds ....

A dozen ways to skin this cat, whichever works for you. But connected clips don't keep sync like Primary Storyline clips do. So, keep that in mind. A dozen ways...
Now that this is brought up, I'd recommend we all fill out the feedback form and request Apple give us an Audio only or Video only Replace edit, that keeps the original of the opposite (overwrite video, audio remains, etc). That would be pretty slick. Not sure any other NLE does that.

what you did was perfectly fine. You are not concerned about keeping sync, as you want to replace the video. Carry on!
And,yes, let's request V or A only Replace edits!

I would not recommend it. The whole point of FCPX is the magnetic timeline. When you connect a clip you effectively doing what you did in FCP 7 but with a lot more flexibility. Plus if you detach audio from a clip there is no way to easily re-atach it.

Compound Clip the two. And he's replacing video, not audio, with video from a different source. So they're not going to be married anyway. No NLE does that.
