Exporting from FCPx to Youtube using Compressor??

Hey everyone

How do all you experienced FCPX users upload a large file to youtube??

I have uploaded without issues in the past but for some reason I'm having issues. It keeps getting to 50% and just seems to get stuck. I have also tried exporting from FCPx then uploading to youtube but it just takes a lot longer than I have experienced before 2% in like 3 hours. I have searched forums that led me to Compressor.

My file is 6.52GB 1920-1080.

I purchased Compressor, and added the video file clicked publish to youtube and changed the setting to HD 1080p.

Why does the youtube option come set as HD 720p?

It went really quickly at first but is now publishing it to youtube 14% complete (0.16GB uploaded out of 1.1GB) with 2.19 elapsed time.

Is there a better way to do this? Any advice would be much appreciated thank you in advance?

There are several ways to do this. I don't ever export directly to YouTube/Vimeo though. I used to export a master file, then convert that in Compressor, then manually upload.

But, it's faster to make a Compressor preset (I usually tweak the settings and increase the data rate), then use that in FCPX. So, I export from FCPX to my Vimeo setting, then manually upload that. I just feel like exporting, converting, and uploading all in one step leaves too many opportunities for glitches.

The manual upload to YT/Vimeo has nothing to do with FCPX - it's your upload bandwidth and the file size you're sending. 2% in three hours is definitely not normal.

Thanks for the reply

How do other people upload from FCPX to youtube? Do you upload at 720P or 1080P?

I have used Compressor and compressed the file from 6.52GB to 1.1GB and its currently uploading 417 minutes remaining.

Does Everyone just have to wait a long time for large files?

Thanks again.

as ddixon already told you: depends on your Upload speed, your ISP offers.
My weekly soccer-reports are 5-700MB, uploaded in ~30min ....... plus, YT needs some 'processing time' ... sometimes a few minutes of the first low-quality version (I upload 720p) , sometimes half an hour... as you probably know, YT converts any upload into several versions, for diff. down-load-speeds of watchers.....

On the 720p or 1080p - I still shoot a fair amount in 720p, as it's the only resolution at which my camera (XF100) has 60fps. If it fits the content, I shoot 1080p30 or in a low light pinch 1080p24. If I've shot in 720, that's what I upload. If the original clips were 1080 I upload that.

Keep in mind that your Youtube account needs to be approved before it can accept videos longer than 15 minutes and that takes a bit of time. You have to upload several below-15 minute videos so Youtube can see that you're not uploading pirated movies, etc. Once that happens the upload should not fail. I'm about to upload a 40 minute 1080p program which clocks in at about 7 GB. I always export and then encode an MP4 with MPEG Streamclip so that I can control the bitrate because I don't trust FCPX when it comes to such things. I need total control. Also, if encoding your own MP4 using MPEG Streamclip be sure to leave B frames OFF otherwise your audio might go out of sync by a couple of frames after it's uploaded. Not sure if Youtube has fixed this or not. I should test sometime.

Thanks a lot for all your comments It must have been the upload speed. It ended up uploading for me over night made for a great start to the day seeing that the film was online.

Ill have to start using compressor now that I have purchased it.

Thanks again. Justin
