Just bought X2pro. Does anyone know whether subroles survive the journey to Protools?

I have gone out on a limb and used FCPX instead of Avid to edit a 2 hour 3 Camera Conference, to get my flying hours up.

But.. the Project has multiclips and compound clips. I now have a 10GB AAF, but no Protools to try it with. Avid failed to import and came up with loads of errors.

I was going to export some stems using subroles as a contingency, but don't see the subroles in the Timeline index. Suspect this is due to the multiclips etc, but how to break apart? I tried feeding the XML through DA Vinci lite, but it just crashes.

Yes all roles and subroles (given appropriate settings of x2pro) creates a track in ProTools which is then poulated with the embedded audio ...

Thanks

Just playing with this now and wondering why I don't see these subroles in the timeline index. If I expand out audio for a clip then select it and assign it a subrole I see it. then delete the clip out of the timeline and edit back in it isn't there. Also it doesn't show up in the browser Roles field. Is this because I'm not assigning Sub Roles to the clips directly? I couldn't work out how to do that.

Thanks Francois,

The problem is more about subroles, I now realise that they propagate down from the Event and not back up from the timeline, but how in that case can you assign independent roles to audio as a batch using the clips from the browser, without opening each one in the Timeline individually and expanding out the audio components?

i spent ages opening up my compound clips and adding subroles to the audio elements of the individual files, but not one shows up in the Timeline. Consequently, on export there are no options to produce stems of these. I'm concerned because most stuff is inside Multi clips, and hasn't been translated. A copy of Logic would be a good way of viewing the show in a track environment and hopefully those subroles would be there.

In case it helps, Sam Mestman recently wrote a series of articles about setting Audio Roles and Subroles inside FCPX, and also roundtripping between FCPX and Logic X/Pro Tools using the X2Pro app. You can check them out at FCPWORKS.COM:

I hope you find them useful. Good luck!

You should just expand all your audio components, and then you can lasso-select and command-select a bunch of them and assign your roles there. However, if you spent all your time changing the audio component roles BEFORE you cut them in (as you seem to have done), you should have the roles assigned already. Check the timeline index under roles to make sure. Just FYI, for audio components, it's often faster to assign them in the timeline because there's currently no way of mass-assigning roles to audio components in the event browser (you have to open each clip in timeline as you have done). Please send feedback for them to add this capability!

When you're exporting a quicktime, you have to go to the settings tab and select "multitrack quicktime" under the "Roles as" drop-down. There, you can assign different roles to different tracks for your quicktime. This is a quick way to create a master with split audio stems.

Hey Bluebicycle-

Here's an article I wrote on this recently--

disproportionatepictures.blogspot.ca/201...les-redux-part1.html

The short version is that you're right, ROLES (like any metadata) applied to a clip in a Project do not filter to any other iterations of that clip in the Project, or back up to the Event.

At this point, there's no good way to apply sub-Roles to audio components in the Event browser. Submit a feature request to Apple. I'm sure they know this is low-hanging fruit but everyone who tells them makes it a bigger priority for them.

The method I've used on the show I'm currently working on is to NAME your audio components with the Roles you want them to eventually have. This can be done to lots of clips with the same channel configuration at once in the Event browser.

Then once you're done your edit, you can CMD-select individual audio components in the Project and assign them all the right Role at the same time.

Thanks, this is all really good information. Its often the way (or pain) of learning a new application, that you discover things for yourself, but often they are not what you thought. All that's needed is confirmation from others, so can you deploy the work arounds!

I was slightly anxious as I took a bit of a risk using FCPX on this project and so am nervous that the audio wlll make it to a dub.

Probably a 3 camera multitrack audio, show wasn't a starter project, but I'm finding it difficult getting people to adopt X and am determined to use it.

Now, armed with a bit more knowledge, at the weekend, its off to do a half hour highlights programme on location, using Movie Recorder and growing clips!
